ScheduleH: ScheduleH (2024)
Wisconsin · Wisconsin DOR · Used for tax years 2024
Wisconsin Schedule H is used to claim the 2024 homestead credit. It reports household income, property taxes and rent, and calculates the credit.
Who files this form
Schedule H is used to claim Wisconsin homestead credit for 2024. The form lists these eligibility limits:
- You must have been at least 18 on December 31, 2024.
- You must have been a legal Wisconsin resident from January 1 through December 31, 2024.
- If you and your spouse were under 62 and neither was disabled, you or your spouse must have had positive earned income in 2024.
- If you were under 62 on December 31, 2024, you cannot qualify if someone claimed or will claim you as a dependent on their 2024 federal income tax return.
- You do not qualify if you are now living in a nursing home and receiving medical assistance under Title XIX.
- Your household income on line 12c must be less than $24,680.
You also do not qualify if you received Wisconsin Works (W2) payments of any amount, or county relief payments of $400 or more, for all 12 months of 2024.
What you'll need
Include a rent certificate, property tax bill, or closing statement with your claim. The form says not to file without one of these documents.
Have the following information available to complete Schedule H:
- Your 2024 Wisconsin income tax return, if you are filing one.
- Information about the taxable and nontaxable household income listed on the form. If married, include both spouses' incomes.
- Your rent certificate information or Shared Living Expenses Schedule, if applicable, including whether heat was included in rent.
- Your net 2024 property taxes, if you are a homeowner.
If you are not filing a 2024 Wisconsin income tax return and report other taxable income on line 8b, attach a schedule listing each income item. If you use a different method to prorate property taxes for a home on more than one acre, attach your computation of allowable property taxes.

Common mistakes
- Leaving out required documents. Do not file without a rent certificate, property tax bill, or closing statement. The form warns that missing documents can delay your refund.
- Forgetting to sign. Sign the return on page 3 before mailing the complete return.
- Counting income twice. Do not include amounts on line 9 that you already entered on line 7, 8a, or 8b.
- Leaving out a spouse's income. If married, include both spouses' incomes.
- Counting yourself or your spouse as a qualifying dependent. Neither belongs in the dependent count on line 12b.
- Using commas or cents. The form says to enter numbers without commas or cents.
- Entering an unissued Wisconsin Identity Protection PIN. Only enter this PIN if you received one from the department.
Questions people ask
Can I complete Schedule H if I am not filing a Wisconsin income tax return?
The form provides income lines for people who are not filing a 2024 Wisconsin return. Enter Wisconsin taxable income on lines 8a and 8b, and attach a schedule listing each income item reported on line 8b.
Do my property taxes have to be paid before I claim them?
Line 13 asks homeowners for net 2024 property taxes on their homestead, whether paid or not.
Does it matter whether heat was included in my rent?
Yes. The form uses 20% of rent when heat was included and 25% when heat was not included. Use the heat information on line 8b of your rent certificate.
What if I received Wisconsin Works or county relief for only part of 2024?
Complete Schedule 3 if, for any month of 2024, you received Wisconsin Works payments of any amount or county relief payments of $400 or more. This schedule reduces the taxes or rent used for the credit. If you received these payments for all 12 months, the form says you do not qualify.
