Common mistakes

  • Do not enter more than $5,000 on line 10, or $2,500 if married filing a separate return. The form also refers to instructions for further limitations, but those instructions were not supplied.
  • Complete Part II as directed on line 10. If line 15 is greater than line 14, enter zero on line 16 rather than a negative amount, and complete Part V.
  • Use the first-in, first-out method when checking whether a 2024 withdrawal occurred within 365 days of a contribution.
  • Do not overlook the income additions and carryover reductions directed in Parts III and IV. Complete Part V where directed.
  • Enter zero for 2024 on line 37, “Prior year qualified Roth rollovers.”

Questions people ask

Can I report contributions if I am not the account owner?

Yes. Part I, Section B is for people other than the account owner. It asks for the owner’s name and address, the beneficiary’s name, and your 2024 contribution amount.

What is the maximum subtraction shown on the form?

Line 10 says not to enter more than $5,000, or $2,500 if married filing a separate return. It also refers to instructions for further limitations. Those instructions were not supplied.

How do I calculate a carryover to 2025?

Complete Part V. It combines the carryover from line 37 of your 2023 Schedule CS with line 16 of your 2024 Schedule CS, then subtracts the amounts listed on lines 43a through 43f. Line 45 shows the carryover to 2025.

What if I withdrew money within 365 days of contributing it?

Part III asks you to use a first-in, first-out method to identify those amounts. The portion previously claimed as a subtraction must be included in income on line 17b. The remainder on line 17c reduces carryover through Part V.
