Form1: Form1 (2024)

Wisconsin · Wisconsin DOR · Used for tax years 2024

Wisconsin Form 1 is an individual income tax return for 2024. It reports income, adjustments, deductions, credits, taxes, withholding, and payments to calculate your refund or amount owed. It can also be used to amend a return.

What you'll need

Have these documents and details ready:

  • Your federal income tax return and schedules. Form 1 starts with federal adjusted gross income from Form 1040, line 11, and asks you to attach copies of your federal return and schedules.
  • Your withholding statements, which must be included for Wisconsin tax withheld on line 28.
  • Your Social Security number and, if married, your spouse’s name and Social Security number.
  • Your tax district, county, and school district number. The tax district is based on where you lived at the end of 2024.
  • Your 2024 estimated tax payment amounts and any amount applied from your 2023 return.

Depending on the entries and credits you claim, you may also need Schedule I, AD, SB, WI-2441, CR, OS, FC, FC-A, H, or H-EZ. The form specifically requires page 4 if you claim the itemized deduction credit or married couple credit.

For the school property tax credit, have your 2024 rent or home property tax amounts ready. For rent, the form separates amounts according to whether heat was included.

How to file

For a paper return:

  1. Complete Form 1 and the schedules that apply to your entries.
  2. Sign and date the return. If filing jointly, both spouses must sign.
  3. Paper clip copies of your federal income tax return and schedules to the return. The form directs you to assemble pages 1 through 5 and withholding statements in the order listed on page 5 of the instructions.
  4. If paying with the return, paper clip the payment to the front. Do not staple.

Common mistakes

  • Using the wrong number format: Use black ink, with no commas and no cents.
  • Stapling the return or payment: The form says not to staple. Use paper clips as directed.
  • Missing a joint-return signature: Both spouses must sign when filing jointly.
  • Entering an incorrect Identity Protection PIN: Only enter a Wisconsin Identity Protection PIN if you received one from the department.
  • Leaving out the credit page: Submit page 4 if you claim either the itemized deduction credit or married couple credit.
  • Mixing spouses’ income on Schedule 2: Put your income in column A and your spouse’s income in column B. Do not include deferred compensation, interest, dividends, pensions, unemployment compensation, or other unearned income on Schedule 2, line 1.
