West Virginia · WV Tax Division · Used for tax years 2025

The 2025 West Virginia RECAP schedule summarizes tax credits claimed with Form IT-140. It lists the applicable credit forms or schedules and totals nonrefundable credits for entry on IT-140, line 9.

Who files this form

If you claim a tax credit listed on the 2025 West Virginia RECAP Tax Credit Recap Schedule, you must include this summary form and the appropriate credit calculation schedules or forms with your Form IT-140 return, subject to the document exceptions noted below.

What you'll need

  • The 2025 RECAP Tax Credit Recap Schedule.
  • The appropriate credit calculation schedules or forms for the credits you claim.
  • A copy of federal Form 2441 if you claim the Child and Dependent Care Expenses Credit.

For Schedule E credits or the Neighborhood Investment Program Credit, keep the other states' returns or the NIPA-2 schedule in your files. You do not need to enclose those documents with your return.

How to file

Enter each applicable credit on its RECAP line. Add the credit amounts and enter the total nonrefundable credits on line 27. Transfer that total to Form IT-140, line 9.

Enclose RECAP and the appropriate credit calculation schedules or forms with your return. The form makes an exception for other states' returns supporting Schedule E credits and the NIPA-2 schedule: keep those in your files instead of enclosing them.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving out RECAP or the required credit calculation schedules or forms. The form says these must be enclosed to claim a tax credit, except for the documents specifically exempted.
  • Failing to keep other states' returns or the NIPA-2 schedule. Although you no longer need to enclose them, you must retain them in your files.
  • Claiming the Child and Dependent Care Expenses Credit without having a copy of federal Form 2441.
