FSD: Application for Firearm Safety Device Tax Credit (2024)
Virginia · Virginia Tax · Used for tax years 2024
Virginia Form FSD is an application for the Firearm Safety Device Tax Credit for tax year 2024. It records taxpayer information, eligible firearm safety device purchases, and the requested nonrefundable individual income tax credit, up to $300 per application.
Who files this form
Individuals seeking the Firearm Safety Device Tax Credit must apply before filing the individual income tax return on which they claim the credit.
For tax year 2024, eligible purchases must be made during 2024 from a federally licensed dealer. The purchase of a firearm is not an eligible transaction.
Each taxpayer may submit only one application per year. Spouses filing jointly may both claim the credit, but each must submit a separate Form FSD and cannot claim the same purchase.
When it's due
- Tax year 2024 purchase period: If you file on a calendar-year basis, eligible purchases must be made between January 1, 2024, and December 31, 2024.
- Application timing for tax year 2024: Submit Form FSD before filing the individual income tax return on which you will claim the credit. The text does not give a specific calendar-date application deadline.
What you'll need
Keep a copy of your purchase documentation for your records. Use your receipt to complete Section II. You may be asked to provide proof of purchase, such as an invoice or receipt.
Have these details ready:
- Your name, Social Security number, address, and phone number. Email is optional.
- Each device’s category code, manufacturer or brand, and model number.
- The federally licensed dealer’s name, purchase date, and eligible purchase expenses.

How to file

Common mistakes
- Assuming funds will remain available: Credits are first-come, first-served, based on when applications are received. The annual cap is $5 million, and no more applications can be approved once the available funds are allocated.
- Submitting more than one application per taxpayer: The form allows only one application per year and only one taxpayer per application.
- Providing an email address when you do not want email communications: Providing it means you consent to emailed communications about this application. Leave the email fields blank if you do not want those communications.
