760IP: Virginia Automatic Extension Payment (2024)

Virginia · Virginia Tax · Used for tax years 2024

Virginia Form 760IP is a payment voucher and worksheet for individual income tax extension payments. The worksheet calculates the tentative balance due from expected Virginia income tax, withholding, estimated payments, and prior-year overpayment credits. Virginia's automatic fil

Who files this form

Form 760IP is for individual income tax filers. You must file it if all three apply:

  • You cannot file your income tax return by the due date.
  • You owe additional tax, as calculated on the Tentative Tax Computation Worksheet.
  • You pay by paper check or money order.

Do not file Form 760IP if no payment is due or if you pay electronically. You do not need this form to receive Virginia’s automatic 6-month filing extension.

Estates, trusts, and unified nonresident filers should use Form 770IP instead.

When it's due

For tax year 2024:

  • May 1, 2025: Your paper Form 760IP and payment must be postmarked by this date to avoid interest and penalties.
  • November 1: The form lists this as the automatically extended filing date for calendar-year filers.

The extension gives you more time to file your return, not more time to pay. Penalties and interest accrue on late payments.

What you'll need

Have these forms and details ready:

  • The income tax return you will file for 2024, which you must refer to when calculating your tentative tax.
  • The Tentative Tax Computation Worksheet on Form 760IP.
  • Your expected total Virginia income tax, Virginia tax withheld, estimated tax payments, and any overpayment credit from the previous taxable year.
  • Your name, address, and Social Security number, plus your spouse’s name and Social Security number if filing jointly.
  • Your daytime telephone number.
  • A check or money order if paying by mail.

Keep the completed worksheet with your other tax records.

How to file

Calculate your payment

  1. Complete the Tentative Tax Computation Worksheet.
  2. Add your withholding, estimated payments, and prior-year overpayment credit.
  3. Subtract that total from your expected Virginia income tax.
  4. Transfer the balance on worksheet Line 4 to the Payment Amount box on Form 760IP if paying by mail.

Pay electronically

Visit www.tax.virginia.gov to use eForms or Individual Online Services. Both use debit EFT and allow you to schedule a future payment. You may also pay by ACH Credit through your bank, which may charge a fee. If you use tax software, you may be able to submit payment through e-File.

Individuals must make all income tax payments electronically if any payment exceeds $1,500, or if total payments are expected to exceed $6,000. This includes estimated, extension, and return payments.

Do not mail Form 760IP if you pay electronically.

Pay by mail

Clearly print or type your identifying information on the form. Make your check payable to Virginia Department of Taxation. Write your complete Social Security number, taxable year, and “VA 760IP” on your payment.

Detach the voucher and mail it with your check or money order to:

Department of Taxation

P.O. Box 1478

Richmond, VA 23218-1478

Keep the worksheet with your tax records.

Common mistakes

  • Treating the filing extension as a payment extension. You still must pay on time. Late payments accrue penalties and interest.
  • Sending Form 760IP when no payment is due or when paying electronically. The form specifically says not to do this.
  • Paying too little by the original due date. You must pay at least 90% of your tax liability by that date to avoid an extension penalty when filing within the extension period.
  • Leaving a balance unpaid when filing your return. A late payment penalty may apply in addition to an extension penalty.
  • Omitting payment details. Write your complete Social Security number, taxable year, and “VA 760IP” on your payment.
  • Mailing the worksheet instead of keeping it. Detach and mail the voucher, and retain the worksheet with your records.
