760ES: Virginia Estimated Income Tax Payment Vouchers and Instructions for Individuals (2024)
Virginia · Virginia Tax · Used for tax years 2024
Virginia Form 760ES provides payment vouchers and instructions for individuals making 2024 estimated income tax payments. It includes a worksheet to calculate estimated taxable income, tax liability and payment amounts.
Who files this form
Form 760ES is for individuals making estimated Virginia income tax payments for tax year 2024. If your expected Virginia income tax, after withholding and allowable credits, is more than $150, you must make estimated payments or have additional income tax withheld throughout the year.
You do not have to make estimated payments if:
- You are single and your expected Virginia adjusted gross income is less than $11,950.
- You are married filing jointly and your combined expected Virginia adjusted gross income is less than $23,900.
- You are married filing separately and your separate expected Virginia adjusted gross income is less than $11,950.
- Your expected tax exceeds your withholding and tax credits by $150 or less.
Farmers, fishermen and merchant seamen with two-thirds of their estimated Virginia gross income from self-employed farming, fishing or being a merchant seaman have special rules allowing fewer payments.
Estates, trusts and unified nonresident composite return filers should use Form 770ES, not Form 760ES.
When it's due
For tax year 2024, pay the full estimated tax by May 1, 2024, or make equal installments by these printed due dates:
| Voucher | Due date |
| --- | --- |
| 1 | May 1, 2024 |
| 2 | June 15, 2024 |
| 3 | September 15, 2024 |
| 4 | January 15, 2025 |
If a due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday, the form allows filing and payment on the next business day without penalty or interest.
If you first meet the requirements later in 2024:
- After April 15 and before June 2: begin by June 15, 2024, using Voucher 2, with three payments of one-third each.
- After June 1 and before September 2: begin by September 15, 2024, using Voucher 3, with two payments of 50% each.
- After September 1 and before December 31: pay 100% by January 15, 2025, using Voucher 4.
Early return option: You do not have to make the January 15, 2025, estimated payment if you file your 2024 income tax return and pay the balance in full by March 1, 2025.
Qualifying farmers, fishermen and merchant seamen: File only Voucher 4 by January 15, 2025. You do not have to file Form 760ES for 2024 if you file your 2024 income tax return and pay the entire tax by March 1, 2025.
What you'll need
Have the following forms and information ready:
- The 2024 Estimated Income Tax Worksheet for Individuals and the instructions for the Virginia income tax return you expect to file.
- Your expected 2024 Virginia adjusted gross income, deductions, qualifying child and dependent care expenses, personal exemptions, tax adjustments and wage withholding.
- Any 2023 overpayment you chose to apply to your 2024 estimated tax.
- Your Social Security number, name, address and daytime phone number. Include your spouse's name and Social Security number for a joint filing.
- If paying by mail, the appropriate Form 760ES voucher and a check or money order for the installment amount from worksheet Line 15.
The form also includes a payment record for tracking payments and overpayment credits applied.
How to file
Calculate your payment. Complete the estimated tax worksheet and use the installment amount on Line 15 for Form 760ES.
Check whether electronic payment is required. You must submit all individual income tax payments electronically if any payment exceeds $1,500, or if the sum of all payments is expected to exceed $6,000. This includes estimated, extension and return payments.
Pay electronically:
- Visit www.tax.virginia.gov/payments.
- Use the Department's eForms or Individual Online Payments options to pay by Debit EFT. Future payment dates may be scheduled.
- You may also pay through your bank by ACH Credit. Some banks charge a fee.
- If you use software, you may be able to submit the payment through e-File or schedule future debit EFT payments.
Pay by mail, if electronic payment is not required: Send the voucher and check or money order to:
Virginia Department of Taxation
P.O. Box 1478
Richmond, VA 23218-1478
Make a check payable to the Department of Taxation.
You may instead file with the Virginia city or county where you live, using the address list in the form. Use the Commissioner of the Revenue column for the first voucher filed for the tax year and the Treasurer column for later vouchers. Make a local check payable to your local Treasurer.
Nonresidents may file with the Department of Taxation or the Virginia city or county where the principal portion of their Virginia-source income was received.
Common mistakes
- Missing or underpaying installments. The form warns that failing to make required estimated payments may result in an additional charge. Section VIII explains the underpayment rules and exceptions.
- Overlooking the electronic payment requirement. All individual income tax payments must be electronic if any payment exceeds $1,500 or total payments are expected to exceed $6,000.
- Leaving out a spouse's Social Security number. Include both spouses' Social Security numbers on a joint Form 760ES.
- Not updating your estimate when income changes. Recompute your estimated tax and adjust the next payment if your expected Virginia adjusted gross income changes.
- Using a help or forms-request address for an income tax return. The form specifically warns not to mail income tax returns to P.O. Box 1115 or P.O. Box 1317.
- Missing part-year resident adjustments. Personal exemptions, itemized or standard deductions, and any child and dependent care deduction must be adjusted for part-year residents. See the Form 760PY instructions.
Questions people ask
Can I apply my 2023 overpayment to a 2024 installment?
Yes. If you chose to apply your 2023 overpayment to 2024 estimated income tax, you may apply part or all of it to any installment. Subtract the amount applied to that installment when completing worksheet Line 15.
Can spouses file a joint Form 760ES?
Yes, unless they are legally separated or divorced, have different taxable years, or one spouse is a Virginia nonresident. The nonresident restriction does not apply if both spouses are required to file a Virginia return. Include both Social Security numbers.
What if we make joint estimated payments but do not file a joint income tax return?
The estimated tax may be treated as paid by either spouse or divided between the spouses as mutually agreed.
Can I schedule an online payment for a future date?
Yes. The Department's eForms and Individual Online Payments options allow future-dated Debit EFT payments.
Where can I get help or more forms?
