Who files this form
Virginia Form 500CP is a corporate income tax extension payment voucher. Use it to pay by check or money order only if you have an approved waiver from electronic filing.
All corporations must file their annual income tax returns and make payments electronically unless they have an approved waiver. You can obtain a waiver request form at www.tax.virginia.gov or by calling (804) 367-8037.
When it's due
- 2025 calendar-year filers: Pay at least 90% of your tax by April 15, 2026. If you have an approved waiver, submit Form 500CP with your payment by that date or as soon as you realize you owe tax.
- 2025 fiscal-year filers: Submit Form 500CP with payment by the due date of your return.
- Nonprofit corporations with unrelated business income, for tax year 2025: The due date is the 15th day of the 6th month following the close of the taxable year.
If the due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, file Form 500CP on the next business day. The filing extension does not extend the tax payment deadline.

Common mistakes
- Using the paper voucher without an approved waiver. All corporation tentative tax payments must be made electronically unless a waiver is approved.
- Treating the filing extension as extra time to pay. At least 90% of the tax must be paid by the original return due date.
- Leaving identifying information off the payment. Write your FEIN, taxable year, and “VA 500CP” on the check or money order.
- Missing the extended filing deadline. If the return is not filed by that deadline, the late filing penalty applies as if no extension had been granted.
Questions people ask
How long is the automatic filing extension?
The extension is 7 months for C corporations and 6 months for nonprofit corporations and entities other than C corporations. It does not extend the time to pay tax.
What happens if I pay less than 90% of my tax by the original deadline?
If you file during the extension period but did not pay at least 90% by the original due date, the penalty is 2% per month or fraction of a month. It runs from the original due date through full payment or the extended return due date, whichever comes first.
Will interest apply to unpaid tax?
Daily interest accrues on tax due and any applicable penalty from the original return due date until paid in full. The rate is 2% over the federal underpayment rate.
Can I schedule an electronic extension payment in advance?
Yes. Payments made through eForms or Business Online Services use Debit EFT and may be scheduled for a future date.
