Common mistakes

  • Treating an extension as extra time to pay. It only gives you more time to file and avoids a late filing penalty. Tax for 2025 must still be paid by April 15, 2026. Interest and penalty accrue on unpaid tax from April 16 until the Department receives payment.
  • Assuming this extension covers Form HS-122. It does not apply to the Vermont Homestead Declaration or Property Tax Credit Claim. The form states that HS-122 is due April 15 of the current year. Late-filed Homestead Declarations may be charged a town late filing penalty of up to 8% of the corrected education tax.
