Common mistakes

  • Treating the extension as extra time to pay. It only gives additional time to file and avoids a late filing penalty. Tax is still due by the April due date. Interest and penalty accrue on unpaid tax from April 16 until the Department receives payment.
  • Assuming the extension covers Form HS-122. It does not apply to the Vermont Homestead Declaration or Property Tax Credit Claim. The form says HS-122 is due April 15 of the current year. Late-filed Homestead Declarations are subject to a town-imposed late filing penalty of up to 8% of the corrected education tax.
