BA-403: Application for Extension of Time to File Vermont Corporate/Business Income Tax Returns (2025)

Vermont · Vermont Department of Taxes · Used for tax years 2025

Form BA-403 is an application for an extension of time to file Vermont corporate or business income tax returns. It reports estimated tax liability, previous payments, and the amount of tax due with the application.

Who files this form

Form BA-403 is used to request more time to file a Vermont Corporate Income Tax Return (Form CO-411) or Vermont Business Income Tax Return (Form BI-471 or Form BI-476).

A federal filing extension automatically extends the Vermont filing deadline to 30 days beyond the federal extension date. It does not extend the time to pay Vermont tax.

For a Vermont consolidated or unitary group return, the Vermont Parent or Principal Vermont Corporation (PVC), respectively, must submit the extension, payments and return using its own name and FEIN. The Parent or PVC must have nexus in Vermont.

What you'll need

Have the following information ready:

  • Entity name, FEIN and mailing address, including a foreign country if outside the United States.
  • Tax year beginning and ending dates, in YYYYMMDD format.
  • The type of federal tax return to be filed.
  • Whether a composite, consolidated or group return will be filed.
  • Estimated tax liability and previous payments, in whole dollars.

How to file

  1. Enter the entity information and tax year dates.
  2. Check one box for the federal tax return to be filed, and indicate any applicable composite, consolidated or group return.
  3. Enter estimated tax liability on Line 1 and previous payments on Line 2. Subtract Line 2 from Line 1 to calculate the tax due on Line 3. Do not enter a negative value.
  4. Make any check payable to Vermont Department of Taxes.
  5. Mail the application and any payment to:

Vermont Department of Taxes

133 State Street

Montpelier, VT 05633-1401

File the application on or before the due date of the applicable Vermont income tax return.

Common mistakes

  • Treating the extension as extra time to pay. Tax remains due by the original due date. Unpaid tax bears interest at the statutory rate and a penalty of 1% or 5% per month, up to 25%.
  • Filing late without an authorized extension. Returns filed after the due date without an authorized extension are subject to a late filing fee.
  • Entering cents or a negative tax-due amount. Use whole dollars and do not enter a negative value on Line 3.
  • Using the wrong entity for a group filing. The Vermont Parent or PVC must submit the extension, payments and return using its own name and FEIN, and must have nexus in Vermont.

Questions people ask

Does a federal extension also extend my Vermont filing time?

Yes. A federal filing extension automatically extends the Vermont filing deadline to 30 days beyond the federal extension date.

Does this extension give me more time to pay?

No. Vermont tax is still due by the original due date. Unpaid tax is subject to interest and penalties.

How do I calculate the payment due with the application?

Subtract previous payments on Line 2 from estimated tax liability on Line 1. Enter the result on Line 3 in whole dollars. Do not enter a negative value.

Who submits the extension for a consolidated or unitary group?

The Vermont Parent or Principal Vermont Corporation (PVC), respectively, must submit it using its own name and FEIN. That entity must have nexus in Vermont.
