Who files this form

Use Form RI-4868 to obtain an automatic 6-month extension to file your Rhode Island resident income tax return (RI-1040) or nonresident income tax return (RI-1040NR).

You do not need to file the Rhode Island extension form if you are not required to make a payment with it.

The extension gives you more time to file, not more time to pay. It does not extend the filing time for Form RI-1040H or Form RI-6238.

When it's due

For tax year 2025:

  • File Form RI-4868, if required, on or before April 15, 2026.
  • Pay the Rhode Island tax due on or before April 15, 2026. An extension does not extend the payment deadline.
  • Forms RI-1040H and RI-6238 must be filed on or before April 15, 2026, even if you obtain an extension for RI-1040 or RI-1040NR.

Common mistakes

  • Treating the extension as extra time to pay. It extends only the time to file, not the time to pay tax due.
  • Failing to make a proper estimate on line A. The form says the extension request will not be valid without a proper estimate.
  • Using RI-4868 to extend RI-1040H or RI-6238. It does not extend either form’s filing deadline.
  • Sending cash or attaching the payment to the form. Use a check or money order for mailed payments, and put it loose in the envelope with the form.
  • Leaving payment details off your check or money order. Include your name, address, “Form RI-4868,” daytime phone number and Social Security number.
  • Forgetting to attach a copy of RI-4868 to your return when you file it. The form specifically reminds you to do so.
  • Including the credit card convenience fee in the payment amount reported on your return. Report the tax payment amount without that fee.
