Who files this form

Use Form RI-4868 to request an automatic 6-month extension to file Form RI-1040, Rhode Island Resident Individual Tax Return, or Form RI-1040NR, Nonresident Income Tax Return.

You do not need to file the Rhode Island extension form if you are not required to make a payment with it.

This extension does not give you more time to pay tax. It also does not extend the filing deadline for Form RI-1040H or Form RI-6238.

When it's due

For tax year 2024:

  • File Form RI-4868, if required, on or before April 15, 2025.
  • Pay the Rhode Island tax due on or before April 15, 2025. An extension to file does not extend the payment deadline.
  • Forms RI-1040H and RI-6238 must be filed on or before April 15, 2025, even if you obtain an extension for Form RI-1040 or RI-1040NR.

Common mistakes

  • Treating the extension as extra time to pay. It extends only the time to file, not the time to pay tax.
  • Not making a proper tax estimate on line A. The extension request will not be considered valid without a proper estimate.
  • Assuming RI-4868 extends Forms RI-1040H or RI-6238. It does not.
  • Forgetting to attach a copy of RI-4868 to your Rhode Island return when you file it. The form specifically reminds you to do this.
  • Sending cash or attaching the payment to the form. Do not send cash. Put the payment and form loose in the envelope.
  • Including the credit card convenience fee in the payment amount reported on your return. Report only the tax payment amount, along with the confirmation number.
