RCT-143: Net Income Tax Report - Mutual Thrift Institutions (RCT-143) (Revision)
Pennsylvania · Pennsylvania DOR · Used for tax years 2024, 2025
Form RCT-143 is Pennsylvania’s Net Income Tax Report for mutual thrift institutions. It reports income, deductions, additions, income apportioned to Pennsylvania, and net income tax, along with payments, credits, and any tax due or overpayment.
Who files this form
RCT-143 is the Pennsylvania net income tax report for mutual thrift institutions in Pennsylvania, including:
- Savings banks without capital stock.
- Building and loan associations.
- Savings and loan associations.
- Savings institutions having capital stock.
The tax is 11.5% of net taxable income.
When it's due
For tax years 2024 and 2025, the printed deadline rules are:
- Calendar-year institutions: April 15 for the preceding year ended Dec. 31.
- Fiscal-year institutions: Within 105 days after the fiscal year closes.
- If April 15 or the 105th day falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or holiday, the report is due the next business day.
- Extensions: Request up to six months by the original report due date. An extension to file does not extend the payment deadline. The request must include payment of taxes owed.
- Remaining tax: Due by the 15th day of the fourth month following the close of the tax year.
- Estimated payments: The text states that payments are due on the 15th day of the third, sixth, ninth, and twelfth month following the close of the tax year.
An amended report must be filed within three years after the original due date, or within three years after the extended due date if the original report was properly extended.
What you'll need
Gather your institution's FEIN, mailing address, phone number, email, and parent corporation's FEIN if it is a subsidiary. Have payment, credit, net loss, payroll, receipts, and deposit records available to complete the report and schedules.
Financial statement attachments
Attach reports of condition for each quarter if all of these apply:
- The tax year ends Dec. 31.
- Reports of condition are filed on a separate-company basis.
- The institution did not enter into a business combination after Dec. 31, 1986, treated as a reorganization under Internal Revenue Code Section 368 or a similar successor provision and accounted for using purchase accounting.
If those conditions are not met, attach:
- A separate-company income statement for the year. For a qualifying business combination after Dec. 31, 1986, determine income or loss using the pooling-of-interest method.
- Separate-company balance sheets for the beginning of the year and the last day of the third, sixth, ninth, and twelfth months.
- A reconciliation of beginning and ending equity account balances.
Other supporting items
- Schedules listing the name, CUSIP number, and interest amount for each U.S. and Pennsylvania obligation claimed.
- Detailed schedules of total interest income and total interest expense.
- Corporate officer information and signature, plus preparer information and signature if applicable.
- For an amended report, REV-1175, Schedule AR, and documentation supporting every change.
- For a final report, the applicable regulatory approval documents, surviving entity's FEIN if applicable, and notification that the FDIC is acting as receiver under the provision stated in the text.

Common mistakes
- Using an outdated form: Use the most current, non-year-specific form and instructions for all years. For an amended report, complete every section and include REV-1175, Schedule AR.
- Formatting entries incorrectly: Use whole dollars and all capital letters. The reminders say not to use dashes or slashes in fields; the checklist specifically requires a leading minus sign for negative amounts, not parentheses.
- Assuming a federal extension applies: The automatic Pennsylvania extension for taxpayers with valid federal extensions does not apply to this tax.
- Paying by an unapproved method: The stated penalty is 3% of tax due, up to $500.
- Filing late: The minimum late-report penalty is $500 regardless of tax liability, plus 1% of determined tax liability over $25,000.
- Duplicating credit requests: Do not request the same refund or transfer through both RCT-143 and written correspondence.
Questions people ask
Can I request an extension online?
Yes. Request up to six months at mypath.pa.gov or by filing REV-426 by the original report due date. The extension does not give you more time to pay.
What happens if the institution overpaid?
You can request a refund or transfer the overpayment to the next tax year. Unpaid liabilities are offset first. If you select neither option, the department automatically transfers the remaining overpayment to the next tax year for estimated tax purposes.
How long can a net loss be carried forward?
A net loss may be carried forward for three consecutive tax periods. Schedule A lists losses starting with the earliest period.
When may an institution apportion its income?
An institution may apportion if it is, or could be, subject to tax in another state based on net worth, gross receipts, net income, or a similar tax base. The apportionment calculation uses payroll, receipts, and deposits.
How do I request a refund or transfer of credit from a prior period?
Send a request on company letterhead, signed by an authorized representative, to RA-CORP_ACC_FAX@PA.GOV. Do not duplicate a request already submitted through RCT-143.
