Who files this form
Form 511 is for Oklahoma residents. A resident is someone whose permanent home, or domicile, was in Oklahoma for the entire tax year.
For tax year 2025, the packet says you must file if your gross income from inside and outside Oklahoma exceeds the amount for your filing status:
| Filing status | Gross income exceeds |
| --- | ---: |
| Single | $7,350 |
| Married filing jointly | $14,700 |
| Married filing separately | $7,350 |
| Head of household | $10,350 |
| Qualifying surviving spouse with a dependent child | $13,700 |
If someone can claim you as a dependent, the filing threshold is gross income over $6,350 for either single or married dependents.
Even if you do not have to file, you should file to get a refund if you had Oklahoma tax withheld, made estimated payments, or qualify for a refundable credit.
Part-year residents and nonresidents generally use Form 511-NR rather than Form 511.
When it's due
- Tax year 2025 paper return: Generally, your return must be postmarked by April 15, 2026.
- Tax year 2025 electronically filed return: The packet extends the due date to April 20. Any tax payment due on April 20 must also be made electronically to count as timely. Otherwise, penalty and interest accrue from the original due date.
The packet allows a later federal due date when provided by the Internal Revenue Code. If a due date falls on a weekend or legal holiday when Oklahoma Tax Commission offices are closed, the return is due the next business day.
What you'll need
Complete your federal income tax return before starting Form 511. You will use information from it to prepare your Oklahoma return.
Include these documents as applicable:
- Copies of Forms W-2, 1099, or other withholding statements, plus required federal schedules.
- Any pages of Schedules 511-A through 511-I or Form 538-S that you filled out.
- Federal Schedule A if you claim itemized deductions.
- A copy of your federal extension if you use it to extend your Oklahoma filing deadline.
- Form 511-TX and a copy of the other state's return when claiming the credit for tax paid to another state. The packet permits Form W-2G instead when the taxing state does not allow a return for gambling winnings.
- Required forms and supporting documents for the deductions and credits you claim.
If you are not required to file a federal return but your gross income exceeds your adjusted gross income, attach a completed federal return showing how you determined your income and deductions.
For an amended return, include applicable federal amendment documents, proof of IRS approval or adjustment, additional withholding statements, and documents supporting your changes.
How to file
- Complete your federal return first, then use that information to complete Form 511 and any required schedules.
- Round amounts to the nearest whole dollar. When adding amounts for a line, include cents in the calculation and round only the final total.
- Attach the required documents. Sign and date the return. Both spouses must sign a joint return.
E-file: The packet lists free, 24/7 online filing through OkTAP at oktap.tax.ok.gov. It also describes electronic filing through a preparer or the internet.
Mail: Paper returns must be postmarked by the applicable due date. The supplied text does not give a mailing address.
Amended returns: Use Form 511, check the amended-return box, and complete Schedule 511-I. File a separate return for each year and mail each year's amended return in a separate envelope.
Common mistakes
- Leaving out completed schedules. Include any completed pages of Schedules 511-A through 511-I or Form 538-S. Missing pages will delay your refund.
- Forgetting signatures. Sign and date the return. Both spouses must sign a joint return.
- Entering incorrect bank details. Verify your direct-deposit routing and account numbers. If direct deposit fails, your refund will be mailed on a debit card.
- Including unrelated correspondence. Send only the documents and schedules required for your return.
- Writing outside designated areas. Leave the form's processing areas blank.
- Claiming a regular personal exemption when someone else can claim you. Enter zero for your regular exemption if you can be claimed as a dependent on another return.
Questions people ask
How can I check my refund?
Visit oktap.tax.ok.gov and select “Where’s My Refund?” under “Individuals,” or call 405.521.3160. You will need the last seven digits of the primary filer's Social Security number, the exact refund amount, and the ZIP code on the return.
How can I receive my refund?
You can choose direct deposit into a checking or savings account, a debit card, or a paper check. If you file on time, you may also apply any amount of your overpayment to next year's estimated tax.
Does a filing extension give me more time to pay?
At least 90% of your tax liability must be paid by the original due date to avoid late-payment penalties. Interest is charged from the original due date. A valid federal extension automatically extends your Oklahoma filing deadline if you owe no Oklahoma tax, but you must attach a copy. If your federal return is not extended or you owe Oklahoma tax, request an Oklahoma filing extension on Form 504-I.
Do Oklahoma residents report wages earned outside Oklahoma?
Yes. Residents must include wages earned outside Oklahoma on their Oklahoma return. If another state also taxes that income, the packet allows a credit using Form 511-TX, subject to its stated restrictions.
