511: 2024 Form 511 Oklahoma Resident Individual Income Tax Forms Packet & Instructions (2024)

Oklahoma · Oklahoma Tax Commission · Used for tax years 2024

This packet contains the 2024 Oklahoma Resident Individual Income Tax Return, Form 511, and instructions for completing it. It also includes Sales Tax Relief Credit Form 538-S, income tax tables and direct deposit instructions. Form 511 can also be used to file an amended return.

Who files this form

Form 511 is Oklahoma’s resident individual income tax return. A resident is someone whose permanent home, or domicile, was in Oklahoma for the entire tax year.

For tax year 2024, you must file if your gross income from inside and outside Oklahoma exceeds the amount for your filing status:

  • Single: $7,350.
  • Married filing jointly: $14,700.
  • Married filing separately: $7,350.
  • Head of household: $10,350.
  • Qualifying surviving spouse with a dependent child: $13,700.

If someone can claim you as a dependent, the filing threshold is $6,350 for both single and married dependents.

Even if you are not required to file, you should file to receive a refund if you had Oklahoma tax withheld, made estimated tax payments or qualify for a refundable credit.

Part-year residents and nonresidents generally use Form 511-NR rather than Form 511.

When it's due

  • Tax year 2024 general deadline: April 15, 2025. Your return generally must be postmarked by this date.
  • Tax year 2024 electronic filing deadline: April 20, as stated in the packet. To be considered timely, any tax payment due on April 20 must also be made electronically. Otherwise, penalty and interest accrue from the original due date.

The packet says that when a due date falls on a weekend or legal holiday when Oklahoma Tax Commission offices are closed, the deadline moves to the next business day. It also allows a later due date when provided under the Internal Revenue Code.

What you'll need

Complete your federal income tax return before starting Form 511. You will use information from that return to prepare your Oklahoma return.

Include these documents when applicable:

  • Copies of Forms W-2, 1099 and other withholding statements, plus required federal schedules.
  • Any pages of Schedules 511-A through 511-I or Form 538-S that you completed.
  • Federal Schedule A if you claim itemized deductions.
  • A copy of your federal extension if you rely on it to extend your Oklahoma filing deadline.
  • Form 511-TX and a copy of the other state’s return when claiming credit for tax paid to another state. The packet provides a Form W-2G alternative for certain gambling winnings.
  • Forms and supporting documents required for the credits or deductions you claim.

For an amended return, include applicable federal amendment documents, proof of IRS approval, IRS adjustment notices, additional withholding forms and documents supporting the changes.

If you are not required to file a federal return but your gross income exceeds your adjusted gross income, attach a completed federal return to show how you determined your income and deductions.

How to file

Online: The packet lists free, 24/7 online filing services through OkTAP at tax.ok.gov. It also describes electronic filing through a preparer or the internet.

By mail: Paper returns must be postmarked by the applicable due date. The supplied text does not include a mailing address.

Before submitting, include the required schedules and documents, then sign and date the return. Both spouses must sign a joint return.

For an amended return, mark the Amended Return checkbox on Form 511 and complete Schedule 511-I. If mailing amendments for multiple years, use a separate return and a separate envelope for each year.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving out completed schedules: Include any completed pages of Schedules 511-A through 511-I and Form 538-S. Missing pages will delay your refund.
  • Forgetting signatures: Sign and date the return. Both spouses must sign a joint return.
  • Entering incorrect bank details: Verify your routing and account numbers. If direct deposit fails, the packet says your refund will be mailed on a debit card.
  • Not rounding amounts: Round all amounts to the nearest dollar.
  • Writing outside designated areas: Leave the form’s processing areas blank.
  • Including unrelated correspondence: Send only the documents and schedules required for your return.
  • Claiming a regular personal exemption when someone else can claim you: Enter “0” for your regular exemption if you can be claimed as a dependent on another return.

Questions people ask

Can I use Form 511 to correct a return?

Yes. Mark the Amended Return checkbox and complete Schedule 511-I. Enter amounts paid with or after the original return on line 30, and any refund previously received or overpayment applied on line 32.

Does a federal extension also extend my Oklahoma filing deadline?

A valid federal extension automatically extends your Oklahoma filing deadline if you owe no Oklahoma tax. Include a copy with your Oklahoma return. If your federal return is not extended or you owe Oklahoma tax, use Form 504-I. At least 90% of your tax liability must be paid by the original due date to avoid late-payment penalties. Interest is charged from the original due date.

How can I check my refund?

Use “Where’s My Refund?” under “Individuals” on OkTAP at tax.ok.gov, or call 405.521.3160. You need the last seven digits of the primary filer’s Social Security number, the exact refund amount and the ZIP code on the return.

Do Oklahoma residents report wages earned in another state?

Yes. Residents must include wages earned outside Oklahoma. If another state also taxes that income, a credit may be available using Form 511-TX.
