IT-205-A: Fiduciary Allocation (2025)
New York · NY DTF · Used for tax years 2025
Form IT-205-A, Fiduciary Allocation, is submitted with Form IT-205 to report an estate’s or trust’s income from New York State sources and allocate shares to the fiduciary and beneficiaries. It also computes allocated New York State tax for a nonresident estate or trust or a part
Who files this form
Form IT-205-A applies to:
- A resident estate or trust with nonresident beneficiaries, if any income distributable to those beneficiaries comes from New York State sources.
- A nonresident estate or trust.
- A part-year resident trust.
A resident estate or trust should not complete IT-205-A if none of the income distributable to its nonresident beneficiaries comes from New York State sources. Instead, include a statement with Form IT-205 saying that those beneficiaries’ distributable income consists only of income that is not taxable to nonresident individuals.
What you'll need
Have Form IT-205 and federal Form 1041 available. Enter the estate or trust’s name as shown on federal Form SS-4, along with its identification number.
Depending on the entries and schedules that apply, the form calls for:
- Copies of each federal Schedule K-1 (Form 1041) for the income distribution deduction.
- A computation of the estate tax deduction.
- Copies of federal Schedule C (Form 1040), Schedule D (Form 1041), Schedule E (Form 1040), and Schedule F (Form 1040) for the corresponding income or loss entries.
- Federal Form 4797 for ordinary gains or losses.
- A supporting schedule for other deductions on Schedule 4, line 28.
- A list of the locations and descriptions of all business places inside and outside New York State when completing Schedule 5.
- Computations for capital loss carryovers reported on Schedule 7.
- A copy of federal Form 4684 to report involuntary conversions of New York property from casualty and theft.
For property sales, the schedules ask for details such as the property description, acquisition and sale dates, sales price, and federal cost or other basis. Schedule 8 also asks for depreciation, improvements, and sale expenses.
How to file

- Nonresident estate or trust, or part-year resident trust: Schedules 4, 2, 3, and 1.

Common mistakes
- Completing the form when the resident-estate-or-trust exception applies. If none of the income distributable to nonresident beneficiaries comes from New York State sources, do not complete IT-205-A. Include the required statement with IT-205 instead.
- Assuming the income percentage cannot exceed 100%. Schedule 1, line 12, specifically says it may be greater than 100%.
- Using the wrong sign for the fiduciary adjustment. The Schedule 2 directions say to add a positive adjustment to income and subtract a negative adjustment.
- Overlooking Schedule 3 reporting. Nonresident beneficiaries must report its income and deduction items on lines 1 through 18 of their New York State returns as items derived from or connected with New York State sources.
