New York · NY DTF · Used for tax years 2024

Who files this form

Complete Form IT-112-C if you want to claim a New York State resident credit for taxes paid to a province of Canada, or if you have an addback for those taxes.

What you'll need

Have these forms and records available to complete IT-112-C:

  • Your New York State return, Form IT-201, IT-203, or IT-205, for income, adjustments, and tax amounts.
  • Federal Form 1116, if filed, for foreign taxes, carryovers, and credits. Submit a copy with IT-112-C.
  • Prior-year Forms IT-112-R or IT-112-C, if you claimed resident credits for taxes paid to Canadian provinces.
  • Your Canadian federal and any provincial returns, for the tax, prepayment, overpayment, and balance-due information requested in Part 4.

A copy of your Canadian provincial return is optional when you file, but you may be required to provide it later.

How to file

Submit Form IT-112-C with Form IT-201, IT-203, or IT-205. Include a copy of federal Form 1116 if filed. Line 29 also directs you to submit copies of federal Forms 1116 for the prior-year tax carryovers entered there.

Complete Part 4 whether or not you include a copy of your Canadian provincial return. Including that return is optional.

The form does not provide a mailing address or e-file directions.

Common mistakes

  • Using Canadian dollars or including cents. Report all amounts in U.S. dollars and use whole dollars for dollar entries.
  • Skipping Part 4. You must complete it even if you do not submit your Canadian provincial return.
  • Using the wrong Part 4 column. For lines 52 through 55, provinces other than Quebec must use the Canada column.
  • Filling in lines after an addback. If line 41 is more than line 40, enter the difference on line 42 and do not make entries on lines 43 through 50.
  • Missing a later-year addback. If Canadian provincial income tax that entitled you to a New York State credit is claimed as a federal foreign tax credit in a succeeding tax year, that amount must be added back to your New York State tax liability for that succeeding year.

Questions people ask

Do I have to attach my Canadian provincial return?

No. Attaching it is optional, but you may be required to provide a copy later. You must still complete Part 4.

Do I have to attach federal Form 1116?

Yes, if you filed it. The form requires a copy of federal Form 1116.

Which currency should I use?

Report all amounts in U.S. dollars. Use whole dollars for dollar entries.

How is the tentative credit determined?

Line 36 uses the smallest amount from line 28, line 32, or line 35. Later lines determine the credit you can apply.

What happens if I later claim a federal foreign tax credit for the same provincial tax?

If that provincial tax entitled you to a New York State credit, the amount claimed as a federal foreign tax credit in a succeeding tax year must be added back to your New York State tax liability for that year.
