Common mistakes
- Leaving the tax period blank: all filers must enter it.
- Omitting unpaid officers from Schedule E: include all appointed or elected officers, whether or not they received compensation. Also include stockholders who owned more than 5% of the taxpayer’s issued capital stock and received any compensation.
- Using a mailing address instead of an actual residence in Schedule E: the form asks for actual residence addresses.
- Leaving out the Schedule C fair market value adjustment computation: the form requires it as an attachment.
- Omitting minus signs: use a minus sign for negative amounts on Schedule C, line 5, and Schedule D, line 10.
- Assuming federal reporting treatment applies to Schedule D: the form warns that you may no longer report gains or losses on property acquired before January 1, 1974 in the same manner as on your federal income tax return.
