RPD-41272: RPD-41272 2025 Calculation of Estimated PIT Underpayment Penalty Form (2025)
New Mexico · New Mexico TRD · Used for tax years 2025
New Mexico Form RPD-41272 calculates the penalty for underpaying estimated personal income tax for 2025. It records your required annual payment, estimated payments and withholding, installment underpayments, and any resulting penalty.
Who files this form
Submit RPD-41272 with your 2025 New Mexico PIT-1 return only if you qualify for an exception method and using it will lower your estimated tax underpayment penalty.
The exception methods cover:
- Using the actual dates when all amounts of tax were withheld.
- Income that varied during 2025, when your income through March 31, 2025, was too small to require an estimated payment.
- Farmers or ranchers who expect at least two-thirds of their 2025 gross income to come from farming or ranching, or who received at least two-thirds of their prior-year gross income from those activities.
If you do not use an exception method, the Department calculates any penalty using the standard method. You may use this form for your own calculation, but do not submit it.
First-year residents in 2025 are not required to make estimated payments.
When it's due
For tax year 2025, the form lists these estimated installment due dates for calendar-year taxpayers:
- April 15, 2025
- June 16, 2025
- September 15, 2025
- January 15, 2026
These are estimated payment deadlines. The text does not give a separate filing deadline for RPD-41272, which is attached to your return.

Have the following information available:
- Your name and Social Security number.

Common mistakes
- Using another year’s instructions. The form warns that line numbers and estimated tax calculations may change from year to year.
- Completing the 2024 column without a full-year return. Do not complete Column 1 if you did not file a full, 12-month New Mexico PIT-1 for 2024.
- Leaving the PIT-1 exception box blank or submitting an incomplete form. The Department may calculate the penalty using only the standard method if the box is missing or incorrect, the form is missing or inaccurate, or you do not qualify for an exception.
- Omitting actual withholding dates. Unless you show when all amounts were withheld, the Department treats an equal amount as paid on each payment due date.
- Skipping Sections 1 through 4 when requesting a Department calculation. Those sections are still required for an exception-method calculation.
- Using the wrong tax year on PIT-ES. Each payment voucher must show the tax year to which the payment applies.
Questions people ask
Can the Department calculate the penalty for me?
Yes. If you use an exception method, complete Sections 1 through 4 and mark the box at the top of page 3. You do not need to complete Sections 5 or 6.
Is there a penalty if my tax after credits and withholding is under $1,000?
No. The text says no estimated tax underpayment penalty applies if current-year tax, less total rebates and credits and income tax withheld, is under $1,000. Do not file this form in that case.
How is the required annual payment determined?
It is the lesser of 90% of current-year tax or 100% of prior-year tax, if you filed a return for a full 12-month prior tax year. Section 2 provides the calculation.
How are estimated payments applied when earlier installments are unpaid?
The Department applies a payment first to the earliest unpaid or underpaid installment. Any balance goes toward the next installment due.
