New Mexico · New Mexico TRD · Used for tax years 2024
Form PIT-X is the 2024 New Mexico Personal Income Tax Amended Return. It compares amounts previously filed with amended amounts for income, deductions, exemptions, tax, credits, and payments, and calculates the tax due or refund.
Who files this form
Use the 2024 New Mexico PIT-X to amend a New Mexico personal income tax return for tax year 2024. The form includes columns for amounts “As Previously Filed” and “As Amended.”
What you'll need
Have your previously filed return and your 2024 federal return available for the original amounts, federal income and deductions, and dependent information requested on PIT-X. You will also need dates and amounts of other 2024 tax payments and refunds received from a previously filed 2024 New Mexico PIT-1.
Attach these documents when they apply:
- PIT-ADJ for additions, deductions, and exemptions reported on lines 11 and 15.
- A copy of the other state's return for the credit for taxes paid to another state.
- PIT-CR for business-related income tax credits and PIT-RC for rebates and credits reported on line 24.
- Annual income and withholding statements for New Mexico income tax withheld on line 27.
- 1099-Misc or RPD-41285 for withholding from oil and gas proceeds.
- 1099-Misc or RPD-41359 for withholding or entity-level or composite income tax paid by a pass-through entity.
- RPD-41272 when using a special method to calculate the estimated tax underpayment penalty.
- PIT-D for refund voluntary contributions.
- PIT-S for dependents beyond the first five.
- RPD-41083 if a deceased taxpayer's refund must be payable to someone other than the taxpayer or spouse named on the return.
- A payment schedule showing dates and amounts if you made more than four payments to report in the Other Payments schedule.

Common mistakes
- Leaving medical deduction information incomplete. You must complete both lines 16 and 16a or the deduction will be denied.
- Leaving working families tax credit information incomplete. The form warns that the claim will be denied without the required line 25 information. Complete lines 25 and 25a, and check line 25b for NM Expansion only if you did not qualify for the federal EIC.
- Counting estimated payments twice. Do not include payments already reported on line 30 in the Other Payments schedule.
- Including interest with prior refunds. Do not include interest paid by the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department when listing refunds in the schedule.
- Missing a spouse's signature. Both spouses must sign a joint return, even if only one had income.
- Choosing direct deposit for an international transfer. You cannot use Refund Express if the refund will go to or through an account outside the United States.
- Omitting dependent entries. Report the first five dependents and other dependents in the form's table, then use PIT-S for additional entries.
