Who files this form

Use the 2025 Schedule PIT-RC if you qualify for one or more of the refundable rebates and credits listed on the form. Include it with your New Mexico personal income tax return, Form PIT-1.

The form lists these modified gross income limits for possible eligibility:

  • Low income comprehensive tax rebate: $36,000 or less.
  • Property tax rebate for persons age 65 or older: $16,000 or less.
  • Additional low income property tax rebate: $24,000 or less, for residents of Los Alamos, Santa Fe, Doña Ana, or Bernalillo County only.

Complete Section 1 to claim rebates and credits in Sections 2 through 5. It asks about New Mexico residency, physical presence in the state, eligibility to be claimed as someone else's dependent, and time spent as an inmate of a public institution.

These income limits are not the complete eligibility rules. The form refers you to the PIT-RC instructions for full requirements, but those instructions were not provided here.

What you'll need

Have the information and forms needed for the credits you claim:

  • Form PIT-1: You need the number of exemptions from line 5 and federal adjusted gross income from line 9.
  • Household income information: Section 1 asks for taxable and nontaxable income, including wages, benefits, business income, capital gains, gifts, and other income.
  • Property tax and rent amounts: For applicable property rebates, you need tax billed for the calendar year on your principal residence and, for Section 3 renters, rent paid during the tax year.
  • Child day care documents: Attach the worksheet from the instructions and Forms PIT-CG. You also need the federal child care credit applied against your federal tax from federal Schedule 3, line 2.
  • Your spouse's information, if married filing separately: Include your spouse's income and the number of exemptions, if any, claimed on line 2g of your spouse's PIT-RC.

The form also refers to Tables 1, 2, and 3 in the instructions for rebate calculations and to an instructions worksheet for the Child Income Tax Credit. Those materials were not provided here.

Common mistakes

  • Checking statements that are not true: In Section 1, check a box only when the statement is true. If you are not married, leave the spouse boxes blank.
  • Leaving out a spouse's income: If married filing separately, include your spouse's income in modified gross income.
  • Using losses to reduce modified gross income: Enter zero, not a negative number, for a business, farm, or rental loss on line 8. Report capital gains without reducing them by capital losses on line 9.
  • Reporting too little modified gross income: Line 12 must equal or exceed federal adjusted gross income on Form PIT-1, line 9.
  • Completing a rebate section above its income limit: Do not complete line 14 if line 13 exceeds $36,000, Section 3 if it exceeds $16,000, or Section 4 if it exceeds $24,000.
  • Missing property rebate details: Indicate your county in Section 4. In Section 3, mark line 16b if the rent amount includes rent a government entity paid on your behalf.
  • Exceeding the printed rebate limits: Line 17c is limited to $250, or $125 if married filing separately. Line 18c is limited to $350, or $175 if married filing separately.
  • Missing child day care requirements: Attach the worksheet and Forms PIT-CG. On line 19, enter the worksheet's Column G total or $1,200, whichever is less.
