PIT-EXT: 23. 2025 PIT-EXT Extension Payment Voucher (2025)
New Mexico · New Mexico TRD · Used for tax years 2025
The 2025 New Mexico PIT-EXT is a payment voucher for making an extension payment toward your 2025 personal income tax liability. It identifies the taxpayer, tax year, and amount enclosed and accompanies a check or money order.
Who files this form
Use the 2025 PIT-EXT voucher if you obtained a federal automatic extension or a New Mexico extension, expect to owe tax on your 2025 PIT-1 return, and want to make an extension payment to avoid interest on the tax due.
PIT-EXT is a payment voucher, not an application for an extension. You may also pay online instead of mailing the voucher.
When it's due
For tax year 2025, if you obtain a federal automatic extension by filing Form 4868, New Mexico accepts that extension. For most calendar-year filers, it allows you to file your New Mexico return through October 15, 2026.
An extension does not stop interest from accruing on unpaid tax.
What you'll need
For a mailed extension payment, have:
- A high-quality printed, original 2025 PIT-EXT voucher, not a photocopy.
- Your name, address, Social Security number, tax year, and payment amount, plus your spouse’s name and Social Security number if applicable.
- A signed check or money order payable to New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department.
- Form RPD-41096, Application for Extension of Time to File, if you are requesting a New Mexico extension. You may submit it with your payment or submit the extension request separately on time.
If you obtained a federal automatic extension, you do not need RPD-41096 unless you need an extension beyond the time allowed by the federal extension.
How to file
Pay by mail
- Complete the 2025 PIT-EXT voucher with your identifying information, tax year, and payment amount.
- Write your Social Security number(s), PIT-EXT, and the correct tax year on your check. Make the check or money order payable to New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department.
- Cut the voucher on the dotted line. Include it with your signed check or money order in your own envelope.
- Mail to:
New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department
P.O. Box 8390
Santa Fe, NM 87504-8390
Pay online
Visit Taxpayer Access Point (TAP). Under GENERAL TASKS, select Make a Payment, then Individual.
Electronic check payments are free. You authorize a debit from your checking account for the amount and date you specify. Credit card payments have a convenience fee based on the transaction amount.
To request a New Mexico extension, submit Form RPD-41096. Paying with PIT-EXT does not replace that application.
Common mistakes
- Using the wrong voucher or tax year. Use 2025 PIT-EXT for a 2025 extension payment. Use PIT-PV for a payment toward a 2025 PIT-1 return already filed or filed with the payment. Use PIT-ES for an estimated payment toward the current year’s tax liability.
- Leaving information missing or hard to read. Check names, address, and Social Security number(s). Write Social Security number(s), PIT-EXT, and the correct tax year on your check.
- Forgetting the payment. Include your signed check or money order with the voucher and mail both to the address printed on it.
- Missing a required extension request. Attach RPD-41096 or otherwise submit a timely New Mexico extension request when required. A federal automatic extension generally removes this requirement unless you need more time than it allows.
- Photocopying or resizing the voucher. Use a high-quality printed original, set printer page scaling to None, and cut only on the dotted line. If the voucher has a scanline near the bottom, do not write around it.
Questions people ask
Does PIT-EXT give me an extension to file?
No. It is a payment voucher for taxpayers who have a federal automatic extension or a New Mexico extension. To request a New Mexico extension, submit Form RPD-41096.
Do I need a separate New Mexico extension if I have a federal extension?
New Mexico recognizes the federal automatic extension obtained through Form 4868. You do not need RPD-41096 unless you request more time than the federal extension allows.
Will an extension stop interest or penalties?
Interest still accrues on unpaid tax. The Department waives the penalty for failure to file and pay through the extension period if you file the return and pay the tax shown by the extended due date.
Can I pay online without mailing the voucher?
Yes. You can pay through TAP by electronic check at no charge or by credit card with a convenience fee.
What happens when I pay by check?
Providing a check authorizes the Department to use its information for a one-time electronic funds transfer. Funds may be withdrawn as soon as the same day you make the payment.
