PIT-EXT: 18. 2024 PIT-EXT Extension Payment Voucher (2024)
New Mexico · New Mexico TRD · Used for tax years 2024
The 2024 New Mexico PIT-EXT is a payment voucher for making an extension payment toward your 2024 personal income tax liability. It identifies the taxpayer, tax year, and payment amount and is submitted with a check or money order.
Who files this form
Use the 2024 PIT-EXT voucher if you have a federal automatic extension or a New Mexico extension, expect to owe New Mexico personal income tax for 2024, and want to make an extension payment to avoid interest on the principal tax due.
You may pay online instead of mailing the voucher with a payment.
When it's due
- 2024 tax year: If you obtain a federal automatic extension by filing Form 4868, New Mexico accepts that extension. For most calendar-year filers, it allows you to file your 2024 New Mexico return through October 15, 2025.
What you'll need
For a mailed extension payment, prepare:
- A high-quality printed, original 2024 PIT-EXT voucher, not a photocopy.
- Your name, Social Security number, and mailing address, plus your spouse’s name and Social Security number if applicable.
- The tax year and payment amount.
- A signed check or money order payable to New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department.
If you need a New Mexico extension, submit Form RPD-41096, Application for Extension of Time to File. You may submit it with your extension payment. If you already have a federal automatic extension, you do not need RPD-41096 unless you request time beyond the federal extension period.
How to file
Pay by mail
- Complete the 2024 PIT-EXT voucher and cut it off only along the dotted line.
- Make your check or money order payable to New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department. Write your Social Security number(s), PIT-EXT, and the correct tax year on your check.
- Use your own envelope to mail the voucher and payment to:
New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department
P.O. Box 8390
Santa Fe, NM 87504-8390
Pay online
Go to Taxpayer Access Point (TAP). Under GENERAL TASKS, select Make a Payment, then Individual.
You can pay by electronic check at no charge or by credit card with a convenience fee. An electronic check authorizes a debit from your checking account for the amount and date you specify.
Request a state extension
To request a New Mexico extension, submit Form RPD-41096 on or before the return’s due date or extended due date. You may submit it with your extension payment.
Common mistakes
- Using the wrong voucher or tax year. Check that you are using PIT-EXT for the year of your extension payment. PIT-PV is for payments toward a 2024 PIT-1 return already filed or filed with the payment. PIT-ES is for estimated payments toward the current year’s tax liability.
- Leaving identifying information unclear or incomplete. Write complete, correct, readable names and address, and clearly write Social Security number(s).
- Missing information on the check. Include Social Security number(s), PIT-EXT, and the correct tax year. Sign and include your check or money order.
- Mailing the voucher without payment or to the wrong address. Include the payment and use the address printed on the voucher.
- Overlooking the extension request. Attach RPD-41096 or otherwise submit a timely state extension request when required.
- Using a photocopy or resizing the voucher. Submit a high-quality printed original, set printer page scaling to None, and cut only on the dotted line. If the voucher has a scanline near the bottom, do not write around it.
Questions people ask
Does an extension stop interest from accruing?
No. Interest accrues even if you obtain an extension of time to file and pay. It is assessed daily on the tax due. An extension payment helps avoid interest on the principal tax due.
Does an extension waive penalties?
The Department waives the penalty for failure to file and pay through the extension period if you file the return and pay the tax shown on it by the extended due date.
Do I need a separate New Mexico extension if I have a federal automatic extension?
No, unless you request time beyond the federal automatic extension period. New Mexico recognizes the federal automatic extension obtained by filing Form 4868.
Is there a fee to pay online?
Electronic check payments through TAP are free. Credit card payments have a convenience fee calculated on the transaction amount.
Can my mailed check be processed electronically?
Yes. Providing a check authorizes the Department to use its information for a one-time electronic funds transfer. Funds may be withdrawn as soon as the same day you make your payment.
