PIT-1: 3 .2025 PIT-1 Personal Income Tax Return (2025)
New Mexico · New Mexico TRD · Used for tax years 2025
Form PIT-1 is the 2025 New Mexico Personal Income Tax Return. It reports income, deductions, exemptions, credits, withholding, and payments to calculate New Mexico income tax due or a refund.
What you'll need
Have your 2025 federal income tax return available. PIT-1 uses federal income, deduction, exemption, and dependent information. If you itemized, it also asks for the state and local tax deduction from federal Schedule A, line 5a.
Attach these documents when they apply:
- PIT-ADJ for additions on line 11 or deductions and exemptions on line 15.
- A copy of the other state's return for the credit for taxes paid to another state.
- PIT-CR for business-related income tax credits on lines 21 or 26.
- PIT-RC for rebates and credits on line 24.
- Annual statements of income and withholding for New Mexico income tax withheld on line 27.
- 1099-Misc or RPD-41285 for withholding from oil and gas proceeds on line 28.
- 1099-Misc or RPD-41359 for withholding or entity-level or composite income tax paid by a pass-through entity on line 29.
- RPD-41272 if you qualify for and use a special method to calculate the estimated tax underpayment penalty.
- PIT-D for refund voluntary contributions.
- RPD-41083 if a deceased taxpayer's refund must be paid to someone other than the taxpayer or spouse named on the return.
Report the first five dependents and other dependents on PIT-1. Use PIT-S for additional entries.
How to file
For a mailed return, submit original forms, not photocopies. Keep a copy for your records.
Sign and date the return. If filing jointly, both spouses must sign, even if only one had income. Include the attachments required for the amounts you report.
Mail the return to:
New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department
P. O. Box 25122
Santa Fe, New Mexico 87504-5122
Common mistakes
- Submitting a photocopy. The form says to submit only original forms and keep a copy for your records.
- Missing a joint-return signature. Both spouses must sign, even if only one had income.
- Marking more than one filing status. Mark only one box.
- Leaving out dependents. Report the first five dependents and other dependents in the table, and use PIT-S for additional entries.
- Incomplete working families tax credit entries. The form warns that the deduction will be denied if the required entries on lines 25, 25a, and 25b are not completed. Line 25b applies only to the New Mexico expansion and is checked if you did not qualify for federal EIC.
- Using direct deposit for a refund going to or through an account outside the United States. The form says you cannot use this refund method if the answer to that question is yes.
- Entering negative amounts on lines 17 or 22. New Mexico taxable income and net New Mexico income tax cannot be less than zero.
Questions people ask

How do I show that I have an extension?
If you have a federal or state extension, mark box 6a and enter the extension date in box 6b.
Can I claim a credit for taxes paid to another state?
