CIT-EXT: 07. 2024 CIT-EXT Extension Payment Voucher (2024)
New Mexico · New Mexico TRD · Used for tax years 2024
The 2024 New Mexico CIT-EXT is a payment voucher for making an extension payment toward corporate income and franchise tax liability. It identifies the corporation, its federal employer identification number (FEIN), and the amount enclosed.
Who files this form
Use the 2024 CIT-EXT if you received a federal automatic extension or a New Mexico extension, expect to owe tax on your 2024 CIT-1 return, and want to make an extension payment to avoid interest accruing on the principal tax due.
CIT-EXT is a payment voucher, not an application for an extension. An extension payment requires a federal automatic extension or a New Mexico extension.
What you'll need
For a mailed payment, have:
- A high-quality printed, original 2024 CIT-EXT voucher, not a photocopy.
- The corporation’s name, mailing address, and federal employer identification number (FEIN).
- The amount enclosed.
- A check or money order payable to New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department.
Write your FEIN, CIT-EXT, and the correct tax year on your check. Sign and include the check.
If you need a New Mexico extension, attach Form RPD-41096 or otherwise submit a timely state extension request. You do not need RPD-41096 if you received a federal automatic extension, unless you need more time than that extension allows.

Common mistakes
- Using the wrong voucher or tax year. Use 2024 CIT-EXT for a 2024 extension payment. Use CIT-PV for a payment toward a 2024 CIT-1 return already filed or filed with the payment. Use CIT-ES for an estimated payment toward the current year’s tax liability.
- Leaving information off the check. Write your FEIN, CIT-EXT, and the correct tax year on it. Sign and include it.
- Mailing the payment without the voucher or to the wrong address. Include both and use the address printed on the voucher.
- Missing the required state extension request. Attach RPD-41096 or otherwise submit a timely request when a New Mexico extension is needed.
- Submitting a poor-quality or resized voucher. Do not use a photocopy. Set printer page scaling to None and cut only on the dotted line. If the voucher has a scanline near the bottom, do not write around it.
- Assuming an extension stops interest. Interest accrues even if you obtain an extension of time to file and pay.
Questions people ask
Does New Mexico accept my federal automatic extension?
Yes. If you obtain a federal automatic extension by filing Form 7004 for tax year 2024, New Mexico allows the same extension period. You do not need RPD-41096 unless you need time beyond the federal extension period.
Does an extension prevent penalties and interest?
An extension waives the penalty for failure to file and pay through the extension period, provided you file the return and pay the tax shown by the extended due date. Interest still accrues and is assessed daily on the tax due. An extension payment helps avoid interest accruing on the principal tax due.
Can I pay online without a fee?
Yes. Electronic check payments through TAP are free. Credit card payments carry a convenience fee.
Can I submit my state extension request with my payment?
Yes. You may submit Form RPD-41096 at the same time as your extension payment.
What happens when I pay by paper check?
Providing a check authorizes the Department to use its information for a one-time electronic funds transfer. Funds may be withdrawn as soon as the same day you make your payment.
