What you'll need

Have these records available to complete the applicable parts of the return:

  • Your federal EIN, business information, and partner counts by residency and New Jersey physical nexus.
  • Form NJ-1065, line 12, for total income.
  • The Partners Directory, line 1c, columns I and J, for nonresident partners’ shares of tax.
  • Records of estimated payments, credit from 2023, and payment from CBT-206.
  • Schedules NJK-1 and PTE-K-1 received, if completing the tiered partnership payment schedule.
  • Your 2023 NJ-CBT-1065 and estimated-tax payment records, if completing CBT-160-P.

Attach CBT-160-P if you use it to calculate underpayment interest or show that you qualify for an exception. If you made more than one payment for an installment, attach a separate calculation for that installment.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving out the federal EIN. The return says you must enter it, and the payment voucher also marks it as required.
  • Omitting information from the check. The voucher directs you to write the federal ID number and tax year on the check.
  • Not attaching CBT-160-P when using it. Attach it if you use it to calculate underpayment interest or claim an exception, and check the attachment box on line 5 of NJ-CBT-1065.
  • Leaving out a separate installment calculation. CBT-160-P requires one if the partnership made more than one payment for an installment.

Questions people ask

Where does total income come from?

What is Schedule T for?

Schedule T is the tiered partnership payment schedule. It lists partnership names, federal identification numbers, shares of New Jersey tax reported on Schedule NJK-1, and shares of Pass-Through Business Alternative Income Tax reported on Schedule PTE-K-1. Its total tax paid on behalf of the partnership goes on line 8 of NJ-CBT-1065.

It helps partnerships determine whether they paid enough estimated tax, whether underpayment interest applies, and how much interest is due. Attach it to NJ-CBT-1065 if you use it to calculate interest or show that an exception applies.

Can an exception eliminate underpayment interest?

CBT-160-P says interest is not required for a payment period if payments were made on time and equal or exceed the amount calculated under either listed exception. The exceptions use the prior year’s return with current-year rates or annualized tax.

Where do I report an overpayment?

Report the overpayment on line 12. The form provides line 13 for a credit to 2025 and line 14 for a refund.
