NJ-630: Application for Extension of Time to File Income Tax Return (2025)
New Jersey · NJ Division of Taxation · Used for tax years 2025
Form NJ-630 requests an extension of time to file a 2025 New Jersey Gross Income Tax return and records any payment submitted with the request. It extends the time to file, not the time to pay tax due.
Who files this form
File Form NJ-630 if you are requesting a New Jersey Income Tax filing extension and either:
- You are not applying for a federal extension; or
- You are applying for a federal extension but need to send New Jersey a payment by the original return due date to reach at least 80% of your actual New Jersey tax liability.
You do not need to submit NJ-630 if you have paid at least 80% of your final tax liability by the original due date and have applied for an automatic federal filing extension. If the federal extension application was filed on paper, enclose a copy with your final New Jersey return.
When it's due
For tax year 2025, online extension requests can be filed until 11:59 p.m. on April 15, 2026, at nj.gov/taxation.
What you'll need
To complete NJ-630, have:
- Your Social Security number, or FEIN for an estate or trust.
- Your name and home address.
- The type of return for which you are requesting an extension, the number of extension months, and the requested extended filing date.
- Your payment amount, if any.
For a mailed payment, use a check or money order payable to “State of New Jersey–TGI.” Write your Social Security number, or FEIN for an estate or trust, and the tax year on your check.
If you rely on an automatic federal extension filed on paper, include a copy of that application with your final New Jersey return.

Common mistakes
- Treating a filing extension as extra time to pay. The extension only gives you more time to file. Tax paid after the original due date is subject to penalties and interest.
- Not meeting the 80% payment requirement. At least 80% of your actual tax liability must be paid by the original due date through withholding, estimated payments, or an extension payment. Otherwise, the extension will be retroactively denied, with penalties and interest imposed from the original due date.
- Missing the extended filing deadline. If the final return is not received by the extended due date, penalties and interest are calculated as if no extension had been granted.
- Leaving out amounts due with the final return. Include any tax due, the 5% late payment penalty on the balance due, if any, and interest calculated at 3 percentage points above the prime rate from the original due date.
Questions people ask
How much extra time does NJ-630 provide?
If all requirements are met, Forms NJ-1040, NJ-1040NR, and NJ-1080C receive a 6-month filing extension. Forms NJ-1041 and NJ-1041SB receive a 5½-month extension.
Will I receive confirmation that my extension was approved?
No. The Division of Taxation does not send an approved copy. It will notify you only if your request is denied, and not until after your return is filed.
Can an estate or trust use its federal extension for New Jersey?
Yes. An automatic 5½-month federal fiduciary filing extension provides the same extension in New Jersey if at least 80% of the actual tax liability is paid by the original due date. If the federal application was filed on paper, include a copy with Form NJ-1041 or NJ-1041SB when filed.
Is there an extension for people in active military service?
People in active service with the U.S. Armed Forces who may be prevented from filing because of distance, injury, or hospitalization arising from that service automatically receive a 6-month extension by enclosing a statement explaining the reason with their return.
