Common mistakes
- Continuing without written approval. If question 1 is answered “No,” stop. You are not eligible for this credit.
- Saving unused credit for another year. The credit must be used in the initial year of participation in the Apprenticeship Start-Up Grant Program. Unused credit is forfeited.
- Using the same amounts for another benefit. Amounts used to calculate this credit cannot also be used for another tax credit or exemption, or a business assistance or incentive award, for a period that coincides with the privilege period for this credit.
- Leaving out other credits already applied. These must be listed to calculate the maximum allowable credit accurately.
- Reducing tax below the required minimum. The credit is limited by the applicable statutory minimum tax.
- Skipping Section A when not sharing. Combined-return members that do not share their credit must still complete Section A, as well as Section B.
Questions people ask
How much is the credit?
The instructions describe a $5,000 credit for documented qualified start-up costs, subject to approval. An additional $5,000 credit is available if the program provides opportunities for workers in key industries such as manufacturing, construction, healthcare, logistics, pharmaceuticals, transportation, tourism, and renewable energy. The amount you can use is limited by your tax liability and the required minimum tax.
Can unused credit be carried forward?
No. There is no carryforward provision. Any unused credit is forfeited.
Must a combined-return member share its credit?
No. Members may choose not to share. A non-sharing member must complete both combined-return calculation sections and fill in the non-sharing oval.
Do I need to include Form 330 if I am not claiming the credit?
Yes. The instructions require the appropriate credit form in the year the credit was earned, even if the credit is not claimed on the return.
