JGI: Jobs Growth Incentive Credit (2024)

Montana · Montana DOR · Used for tax years 2024

Montana Form JGI calculates the Jobs Growth Incentive Credit you can claim on your 2024 tax return. It reports the approved credit, prior-year carryforwards used, and remaining credit available to carry forward.

Who files this form

Form JGI is for eligible employers claiming the Jobs Growth Incentive Credit on their Montana tax return. To claim a new credit, you must apply to the Montana Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) and receive a Credit Certificate.

Individuals, estates, trusts, and corporations use the form to calculate their credit. Complete Part I if you have a credit carryforward from a previous tax year.

Partnerships and S corporations do not complete Form JGI. They report the certified credit on Form PTE, Schedule II, and pass it to partners or shareholders in proportion to their Montana source income (loss). Each recipient’s share is reported on Montana Schedule K-1 (PTE).

What you'll need

  • DLI Credit Certificate: Attach a copy with Form JGI to your tax return when claiming a new credit. A certificate is not required when claiming only a carryforward.
  • Previous year’s Form JGI: Use its Carryforward Table to find unused credit from earlier years.
  • Your 2024 tax liability: Use Form 2, line 8, for individuals; Form FID-3, page 3, line 19, for estates and trusts; or Form CIT, line 10, for C corporations.
  • Montana Schedule K-1, if applicable: If you receive the credit from a pass-through entity, enter the entity’s name as shown on the schedule and its Federal Employer Identification Number.

The form also asks for your name as shown on your Montana tax return, your FEIN or SSN, and the Credit Certificate number.

How to file

Attach Form JGI and a copy of the required Credit Certificate to your Montana tax return. The text does not provide a mailing address or e-filing directions.

  1. Complete Part I for prior-year carryforwards. Use the oldest credit first. If tax liability remains and another year’s carryforward is available, complete Part I again for that year.
  2. Complete Part II for the 2024 credit. Enter the approved credit from your certificate and your remaining 2024 tax liability. Follow the lines to calculate the credit used and any carryforward.
  3. Update Part III. Track each credit year separately.

Report the credit on:

  • Individuals: Form 2, Schedule III, Tax Credits.
  • Estates and trusts: Form FID-3, page 2.
  • Corporations: Form CIT, Schedule C.

Common mistakes

  • Using new credit before carryforwards: For tax year 2024, use remaining carryforwards before calculating the 2024 credit. Use the oldest available credit first.
  • Combining credit years in your records: Calculate and track the credit available for each tax year separately.
  • Missing a required certificate: DLI must issue a Credit Certificate for every year a new credit is claimed. Attach a copy to your return with Form JGI. Carryforward claims do not require a certificate.
  • Claiming both current-year credits: You cannot claim both the Apprenticeship Credit and the Jobs Growth Incentive Credit in the same year. You may, however, use a prior-year Jobs Growth Incentive Credit carryforward in a year you claim the Apprenticeship Credit.
