MO-TC: Miscellaneous Income Tax Credits (2024)

Missouri · Missouri DOR · Used for tax years 2024

Missouri Form MO-TC is used to claim miscellaneous income tax credits for 2024. It lists each credit’s name, identifying code, benefit number and amount, and calculates the total credits to report on your income tax return.

Who files this form

Use the 2024 Form MO-TC to claim miscellaneous income tax credits on Form MO-1040, MO-1120, or MO-1041. Attach MO-TC to that return.

The form also includes lines for reporting tax liability and transferring credits for Form MO-PTE.

What you'll need

  • Your income tax return, so you can enter the tax liability requested on Line 12.
  • The attachments listed for your credit in the form’s “Attach to Form MO-TC” column. These vary by credit and may include a certificate, specific tax forms, a receipt, or an allocation schedule. Certificates marked with an asterisk must be approved by the issuing agency.
  • Your Certificate of Eligibility, when applicable, for the benefit number. Use its last six digits.
  • If you are a shareholder or partner claiming a credit, a copy of the shareholder listing or Federal Schedule K-1 specifying your percentage and the corporation’s percentage of ownership.
  • If you file a combined return and both spouses have income, a credit certificate with both names on it.

Examples of credit-specific attachments include Form ATC and Federal Form 8839 for the Adoption Tax Credit, Form MO-FPT for the Food Pantry Tax Credit, and a receipt for MO Scholars. Check the entry for each credit you claim.

How to file

  1. Enter your identifying information and list each credit’s name, three-character alpha code, benefit number, and amount. Credits apply against your tax liability in the order listed.
  2. Use Column 1 for an individual return with a single filing status, a corporation income tax return, or a fiduciary return. For a combined return where both spouses have income, use Column 1 for yourself and Column 2 for your spouse.
  3. Add Lines 1 through 10 for the Line 11 subtotals. On Line 12, enter the tax liability from MO-1040, Lines 35Y and 35S; MO-1120, Line 16; MO-1041, Line 15; or MO-PTE, Line 10, as applicable.
  4. Add the two Line 11 column amounts and enter the total on Line 13. Transfer it to MO-1040, Line 42; MO-1120, Line 17; MO-1041, Line 16; or MO-PTE, Line 11, as applicable.
  5. Complete the signature area and include the required credit attachments. The form directs you to attach MO-TC to MO-1040, MO-1120, or MO-1041.

The supplied text does not give mailing or e-filing directions for submitting the return. The agency addresses listed on the form are provided for credit information, forms, and approval.

Common mistakes

  • Entering the full certificate number. The benefit number is only the last six digits of the number on your Certificate of Eligibility.
  • Using the wrong alpha code. Use the three-character code assigned to the credit on the form’s second page.
  • Claiming more than the allowed tax liability. Credits in either column cannot exceed the applicable tax liability unless the credit is refundable. Line 13 also cannot exceed Line 12 unless the credit is refundable.
  • Leaving extra credits off the form. If you claim more than 10 credits, attach additional MO-TC forms.
  • Missing a spouse’s name on the certificate. When filing a combined return and both spouses have income, both names must appear on the credit certificate.
  • Missing annual Shared Care registration. The Shared Care entry says to register each year with the Division of Senior and Disability Services and attach Form MO-SCC.
