MO-2220: Corporation Underpayment of Estimated Tax Schedule (2025)

Missouri · Missouri DOR · Used for tax years 2025

Form MO-2220 is Missouri’s 2025 Corporation Underpayment of Estimated Tax Schedule. It calculates underpayments for each estimated tax installment, checks exceptions, and determines any addition to tax. Attach it to Form MO-1120.

Who files this form

Corporations use Form MO-2220 to determine whether they owe an addition to tax for underpaying estimated tax and, if so, how much.

Estimated tax payments are required if Missouri estimated tax can reasonably be expected to be $250 or more.

For the 2025 schedule, Line 1 compares 90% of the 2025 tax, after approved corporation income tax credits, with 100% of the 2024 tax and uses the smaller amount. If Line 1 is $250 or less, do not complete Form MO-2220.

When it's due

For the 2025 tax year, estimated tax installment due dates are the 15th day of the 4th, 6th, 9th, and 12th months of the tax year. Enter these dates on Line 2.

For the addition-to-tax calculation, Line 17 uses the payment date or the 15th day of the 4th month after the close of the tax year, whichever is earlier.

The text does not give a separate filing deadline for Form MO-2220.

  • Your taxable year beginning and ending dates, Federal Employer I.D. Number, Missouri Tax I.D. Number, and charter number.

Common mistakes

  • Completing the schedule when Line 1 is $250 or less. The form says not to complete it in that case.
  • Using too much in approved corporation tax credits. Credits cannot exceed Form MO-1120, Line 13.
  • Assuming a final installment payment fixes earlier missed payments. Paying on the last installment date does not relieve the corporation of an addition to tax for missing earlier due dates.
  • Leaving out exception details. Read the instructions before entering amounts on Lines 9 through 14. Exceptions 2, 3, and 5 require Part 4 and attached computations.
  • Using an exception that is not available to the corporation. Large corporations cannot use Exceptions 1 or 4. Only large corporations may use Exception 5.

Questions people ask

What counts as a large corporation?

A corporation, or any predecessor corporation, is a large corporation if, in any of the three preceding taxable years, it had federal taxable income of at least $1 million and Missouri taxable income of at least $100,000.

Can an exception eliminate the addition to tax?

Yes. The corporation is not liable for an addition to tax for a payment period if its payments on Line 9 equal or exceed the amount determined under an applicable exception for that same period.

Can I use the prior year's tax for Exception 1?

The prior-year return must cover 12 months and show a tax liability. Exception 1 is not available to large corporations. If there was no prior-year tax liability, the instructions direct you to Exception 4.

How is a prior-year overpayment applied?

It is applied against the earliest installment unless the corporation requested otherwise.
