Who files this form

Use 2024 Schedule M1M to report the income additions and subtractions that apply to you and determine lines 2 and 7 of Minnesota Form M1. You must include the completed schedule with Form M1.

Items covered include:

  • Additions for interest from another state's municipal bonds, certain tax-exempt mutual fund dividends, and higher education savings account distributions used for K–12 tuition.
  • Subtractions for eligible charitable contributions, taxable Social Security benefits, qualifying K–12 education expenses, and certain military pay or pensions.
  • Other additions and subtractions listed on the schedule, each with its own requirements.

What you'll need

Use the forms and worksheets that apply to your entries:

  • Minnesota Form M1 and your federal return: Several entries use amounts from Form 1040 or 1040-SR and federal Schedule 1.
  • Federal Form 4972: Include a copy if reporting the capital gain portion of a qualifying lump-sum distribution on line 4.
  • Federal Form 1099-Q: Its reported earnings are used to calculate the line 6 addition for K–12 tuition distributions.
  • Related Minnesota schedules: Include Schedule M1HOME for applicable first-time homebuyer savings account entries, M1529 for line 15, M1R for line 16, and M1QPEN for line 29. Lines 9 and 34 use amounts from Schedule M1NC.
  • Subtraction worksheets: Use the applicable worksheets for charitable contributions, Social Security benefits, K–12 education expenses, and volunteer mileage reimbursements. The charitable contribution worksheet also requires the Schedule M1SA instructions.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving out child information: For line 13, enter each child's name and grade at the time the expenses were paid.
  • Subtracting benefits or pay twice: Do not include Railroad Retirement Board benefits on line 17 if already subtracted on line 12. Do not repeat active-duty pay from line 20 on line 21.
  • Combining incompatible military tax benefits: If you claim the military pension subtraction, you may not claim the credit for past military service on Schedule M1C, line 4.
  • Including an AmeriCorps work stipend: Line 26 is for post-service education awards, not stipends received while working in the program.
  • Using the wrong sign: Enter the Schedule M1NC subtraction on line 34 as a positive number.
  • Forgetting the schedule: You must include Schedule M1M with Form M1.
