KFNC: Federal Adjusmtents (2024)

Minnesota · Minnesota DOR · Used for tax years 2024

Minnesota's 2024 Schedule KFNC is a supplemental schedule a trust or estate provides to its beneficiaries. It reports each beneficiary's share of adjustments for federal tax law changes Minnesota has not adopted, for use in completing Schedule M1NC or M2NC.

Who files this form

Schedule KFNC is a supplemental schedule that a trust or estate provides to its beneficiaries to report their share of federal tax adjustments for Minnesota purposes.

Beneficiaries use this information to complete:

  • Schedule M1NC if they are individuals.
  • Schedule M2NC if they are trusts or estates.

Beneficiaries must include Schedule KFNC with their Minnesota return. The schedule must also be included when filing Schedule KF.

What you'll need

The schedules and information used include:

  • Schedule KFNC provided by the trust or estate.
  • Schedule M1NC for an individual beneficiary, or Schedule M2NC for a trust or estate beneficiary.
  • Schedule KF, which receives the total adjustment from Schedule KFNC.
  • The beneficiary’s name and Social Security number.
  • The trust’s or estate’s name, federal ID number, and Minnesota ID number.

If an amended Schedule KFNC changes your adjustments, use Form M1X for an individual beneficiary or Form M2X for a trust or estate beneficiary to amend the Minnesota return.

How to file

Include Schedule KFNC when you file Schedule KF. Beneficiaries must also include Schedule KFNC with their Minnesota return.

Report the adjustments on Schedule M1NC for an individual beneficiary or Schedule M2NC for a trust or estate beneficiary, using the line references provided in Schedule KFNC.

For line 17, total lines 1 through 16:

  • If the total is positive, enter it on Schedule KF, line 7.
  • If the total is negative, enter it as a positive number on Schedule KF, line 20.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving out Schedule KFNC. It must be included with Schedule KF and with the beneficiary’s Minnesota return. The text warns that omitting it from the return will delay processing.
  • Not amending a return after adjustments change. If you receive an amended Schedule KFNC and your adjustments have changed, you must file an amended Minnesota return.
  • Using the wrong sign for the total. A negative line 17 total must be entered as a positive number on Schedule KF, line 20.
  • Not rounding amounts. The form directs you to round amounts to the nearest whole dollar.
