4913: 2024 Corporate Income Tax Quarterly Return and Instructions (2024)

Michigan · Michigan Treasury · Used for tax years 2024

Michigan Form 4913 is the 2024 Corporate Income Tax Quarterly Return used to send quarterly estimated tax payments by check. The voucher records the taxpayer’s identifying information, tax year ending, and payment amount, and may also be used by Michigan Business Tax filers.

Who files this form

Taxpayers whose annual combined Michigan Corporate Income Tax (CIT) liability is reasonably expected to exceed $800 must make quarterly estimated payments. CIT applies to C Corporations and entities taxed as C Corporations for federal income tax purposes, financial institutions, and insurance companies.

  • Form 4913 is used for quarterly payments by check. It is not required when payments are made online.
  • Michigan Business Tax (MBT) filers should also use Form 4913 to pay their estimates, using current-year MBT instructions to calculate payments.
  • For a Unitary Business Group (UBG), the Designated Member should make all CIT estimated payments.
  • If your tax year is shorter than 12 months, annualize the tax to determine whether estimates are required. CIT estimated payments are not required for a short year of less than four calendar months.

When it's due

For calendar-year taxpayers, estimated returns and payments for tax year 2024 are due by:

  • April 15, 2024
  • July 15, 2024
  • October 15, 2024
  • January 15, 2025, for the final quarter of 2024

For fiscal-year taxpayers using the 2024 form, returns and payments are due 15 days after the end of each fiscal quarter.

Insurance companies must file on a calendar-year basis.

What you'll need

To complete the payment voucher, have:

  • Your taxpayer name and mailing address.
  • Your Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN) or Michigan Treasury (TR) number.
  • Your tax-year ending date in YYYYMM format.
  • Your payment amount.

For a mailed payment, enclose a check with the completed Form 4913. If Treasury sent you a personalized estimate return, use it only if its information is correct. File the original and keep a copy.

To calculate the payment, use the actual CIT liability for the quarter or the estimated annual liability. Some C Corporations may be able to approximate business income using monthly profit and loss statements.

Common mistakes

  • Using an incorrect personalized return. Do not use a personalized return with incorrect information, another taxpayer’s return, or a photocopy of another taxpayer’s form. The payment could post to the wrong account.
  • Stapling the check to the return. The form says not to fold or staple the payment materials.
  • Missing payment adjustments. Second-, third-, and fourth-quarter payments should include necessary adjustments for earlier overpayments or underpayments.
  • Underpaying estimates or paying late. To avoid interest and penalty, payments must be timely and meet the quarterly amount requirements. Unless an applicable safe harbor is satisfied, total estimates must be at least 85 percent of annual liability, and each quarterly payment must reasonably approximate that quarter’s liability.
  • Leaving estimated payments off the annual return. Report all CIT estimated payments on the CIT annual return. MBT filers report them on the MBT annual return.
  • Using an ineligible account for online debit. A debit transaction is ineligible if its foreign-account connection makes it an International ACH Transaction under NACHA rules. Ask your financial institution about the account’s status.

Questions people ask

How much should I pay each quarter?

Each payment must approximate the quarter’s tax liability or equal 25 percent of estimated annual liability. Adjust later quarters for earlier overpayments or underpayments. Insurance companies calculate estimates using the greater of CIT or retaliatory tax liability.

Can I base payments on last year’s CIT liability?

If the preceding year’s CIT liability was $20,000 or less, you can make four equal, timely installments totaling that liability. Faster payments also qualify. You must have had Michigan business activity in the prior year, and no safe harbor exists if the business did not exist then. If the prior tax year was shorter than 12 months, annualize its liability for both the $20,000 limit and the payment calculation.

Do I need to send Form 4913 after paying online?

No. Form 4913 is not required when estimated payments are made online through Michigan Treasury Online.

How do I claim a refund?

You must file an annual return to claim a refund. Report your estimated payments on the CIT annual return, or on the MBT annual return if you are filing under MBT.
