4700: Gross Receipts Worksheet (2025)

Michigan · Michigan Treasury · Used for tax years 2025

Michigan Form 4700 is a worksheet for calculating gross receipts using federal return information and adjustments for additions and exclusions. It has separate sections for individuals and fiduciaries, C corporations, and partnerships and S corporations.

Who files this form

Form 4700 calculates gross receipts for Michigan Business Tax (MBT) purposes. The form directs filers to complete the worksheet and attach it to their return.

Complete the part that matches your organization type:

  • Part 1: Individuals and fiduciaries.
  • Part 2: C corporations and people filing federal returns as C corporations.
  • Part 3: Partnerships, S corporations, and people filing federal returns as partnerships or S corporations.

Parts 4 and 5 apply to all filers. Unitary Business Groups (UBGs) must complete and attach a separate worksheet for each member.

What you'll need

Have your FEIN or TR number available, along with the UBG member’s FEIN or TR number if applicable.

Use the applicable federal returns and schedules listed on the worksheet:

  • Individuals and fiduciaries: Form 1040 Schedules C or C-EZ, D, and E, plus Form 4797.
  • C corporations: Form 1120, its Schedule D, and Form 4797.
  • Partnerships and S corporations: Form 1065 or Form 1120S, Schedules D and K, Form 8825, and Form 4797.

You also need information about receipts covered by the additions in Part 4 and exclusions in Part 5. The form cautions that gross receipts may not come entirely from the federal return.

For exclusions on lines 66 through 73, check purchases deducted on Form 4567, lines 13 through 15, or, for UBG standard members, Form 4580, lines 18 through 20.

How to file

Complete Form 4700 and attach it to your return. UBGs must attach a worksheet for each member. The supplied form does not give a mailing address or e-file directions.

To complete the calculation:

  1. Complete Part 1, 2, or 3 for your organization type. Carry the total from line 6, 12, or 18 to line 19.
  2. Complete Part 4 for additions to gross receipts. Add lines 19 and 30 to get line 31.
  3. Complete Part 5 for applicable exclusions, using its limits and conditions.
  4. Subtract lines 65 and 74 from line 31 to calculate line 75.
  5. Carry line 75 to Form 4567, line 12. Standard members of a UBG carry it to Form 4580, Part 2A, line 17 instead.

Common mistakes

  • Using net figures that include losses without adjustment. Before statutory exceptions, gross receipts consist only of positive amounts. If a federal item used in Parts 1 through 3 combines positive and negative transactions, recalculate it using only the positive elements.
  • Adding receipts twice. Part 4 additions apply only to amounts excluded or deducted in arriving at line 19.
  • Excluding receipts that were not included. Part 5 exclusions apply only to receipts included in line 31.
  • Deducting the same amount twice. Lines 66 through 73 also require that the amounts were not deducted as purchases from other firms on the specified lines of Form 4567 or Form 4580.
  • Netting capital-asset gains against losses on line 48b. The form explicitly says not to do this.
  • Overlooking unusual receipts. Report gross receipts not identified by a specific worksheet line on the most appropriate line.

Questions people ask

Do I complete all three organization-type parts?

No. Complete the appropriate Part 1, 2, or 3 based on your organization type. Parts 4 and 5 apply to all filers.

Can a UBG use one worksheet for the whole group?

The form requires a separate completed worksheet for each member, attached to the return.

Are gross receipts always taken directly from my federal return?

No. The form says gross receipts are not necessarily derived entirely from the federal return. Parts 4 and 5 adjust the federal gross receipts amount.

Where does the final worksheet amount go?

Carry line 75 to Form 4567, line 12. Standard members of a UBG carry it to Form 4580, Part 2A, line 17.
