Common mistakes
- Do not enter an amount on line 6. The form explicitly says no amount belongs there.
- Follow the skip directions. If you are not claiming the Compensation Credit, skip to line 14 and enter the amount from Form 4588, line 23.
- Follow the rules for negative results. Lines 11, 14, 16, 21, and 26 require zero when the result is less than zero. Line 18b instead requires a negative number when its result is less than zero.
- Carry the totals to the correct lines. Line 5 goes to Form 4588, line 52. Line 28 goes to Form 4588, line 24.
Questions people ask
Which credits are listed as refundable?
The form lists the WDSB Credit, MEGA Employment Tax Credit, MEGA Photovoltaic Technology Credit, and Film Production Credit in Part 1. Add lines 1 through 4 to calculate total refundable credits on line 5.
How is the Compensation Credit calculated?
Multiply Michigan compensation on line 7 by 0.37% (0.0037). The allowable credit on line 13 is the lesser of that result or line 12. Line 12 is 65% of the amount from Form 4588, line 23, minus the WDSB Credit, with that difference treated as zero if it is negative.

How do I total the nonrefundable credits?
Add lines 13, 15, 18b, 20, and 25. Enter the total on line 28 and carry it to Form 4588, line 24.
