4575: Loss Adjustment Worksheet for the Small Business Alternative Credit (2024)

Michigan · Michigan Treasury · Used for tax years 2024

Michigan Form 4575 is a worksheet for calculating a loss adjustment for the 2024 Michigan Business Tax Small Business Alternative Credit. It reports current-year income amounts, available losses from the five preceding tax years, losses used, and remaining loss carryforwards.

Who files this form

Use Form 4575 for tax year 2024 to apply prior losses toward qualifying for the Michigan Business Tax Small Business Alternative Credit (SBAC), or to reduce the required credit reduction.

This adjustment is available only if you had negative adjusted business income in one of the five immediately preceding tax years and received an MBT SBAC for that same loss year.

Partnerships must make the adjustments described in the form's instructions. Unitary Business Groups (UBGs) generally complete one group copy. Supporting member forms are required when a member's available loss from years outside the group is used against the group's adjusted business income disqualifier.

What you'll need

Have these forms and records available:

  • Form 4567, MBT Annual Return: Use the name and account number reported on page 1.
  • Form 4571: You will need current-year amounts from lines 5 and 8, plus prior-year line 8 amounts for qualifying loss years.
  • Form 4577, MBT Schedule of Shareholders and Officers: When applicable, use shareholder compensation and director fees from column L and ownership percentages from column G.
  • Form 4578, MBT Schedule of Partners: Partnerships use ownership percentages from column C and records of guaranteed payments to the partner creating the disqualifier.
  • Prior-year returns and loss records: Gather tax year-end dates for the five preceding tax years, SBAC information, and amounts of losses already used.

UBGs may also need supporting member Forms 4575 and records of losses from members' separately filed years.

How to file

Include the completed Form 4575 as part of your tax return filing.

UBGs generally file one copy labeled “GROUP COPY FOR ABI.” When supporting member forms are required for losses from separate years, complete only Part 2, lines 10 through 13, on those member forms.

The supplied text does not provide a mailing address or e-file directions.

Common mistakes

  • Entering losses with minus signs: Enter loss amounts on lines 11 through 16 without a negative sign.
  • Putting prior years in the wrong order: List all five preceding tax years on line 10, oldest at the left. Complete lines 11 through 16 only for years that reported a loss, generated or used, and received an SBAC.
  • Using the wrong date format: Enter dates as MM-DD-YYYY.
  • Skipping the initial line 5 calculation: Start with $160,000 on line 5. If line 7 is negative, use a higher amount from the printed chart and recalculate as directed.
  • Trying to reduce C corporation compensation with a loss: A loss adjustment cannot reduce compensation reported in Form 4577, column L. If compensation exceeds $180,000 for any C corporation shareholder or officer, the SBAC cannot be claimed.
  • Overlooking short-year adjustments: For a tax year under 12 months, annualize the amounts on lines 1, 4, and 6. Part-year shareholders must also annualize compensation on line 6.

Questions people ask

How are available losses applied?

Use qualifying losses from the five preceding tax years on a first-in, first-out basis, starting with the oldest available loss.

Can a loss adjustment fix a credit reduction based on gross receipts?

No. It does not affect an SBAC reduction based on gross receipts exceeding $19,000,000.

What if there is not enough loss for the full credit?

You may be able to calculate a smaller loss adjustment and claim a reduced credit using the line 5 chart. To benefit from a loss adjustment, total available loss on line 13 must equal or exceed the required adjustment on line 14.

What do I do after the loss adjustment removes a disqualifier?

If it removes the adjusted business income disqualifier, no calculated amount transfers from this worksheet. Proceed with the remaining SBAC calculation on Form 4571. If it fully or partially resolves an owner's allocated income disqualifier, shown by a blank final applicable column on line 15, carry line 5 to Form 4571, line 11.
