3174: Direct Deposit of Refund (2024)

Michigan · Michigan Treasury · Used for tax years 2024

Michigan Form 3174 requests direct deposit of a 2024 refund when filed with Form MI-1040CR-7. It collects filer identification, financial institution details, routing and account numbers, and the account type.

Who files this form

Use Form 3174 to request direct deposit if you file Form MI-1040CR-7 and are not receiving an energy draft. Include it with your MI-1040CR-7.

Do not file Form 3174 if:

  • An energy draft will be issued or a credit will be sent to your heat provider.
  • You are a personal representative filing for a deceased taxpayer.
  • You file electronically.
  • You completed the direct deposit information on Form MI-1040, MI-1040CR or MI-1040CR-2.

What you'll need

Have your Form MI-1040CR-7 and the following information ready:

  • Your name and full Social Security number.
  • Your spouse’s name and full Social Security number if filing jointly.
  • The name of your financial institution.
  • Your 9-digit routing transit number (RTN).
  • Your account number and whether the account is checking or savings.

Check with your financial institution to confirm that it accepts direct deposit and that your routing and account numbers are correct. For a joint refund going into an individual account, verify that the institution allows it.

Do not attach a check or check copy.

How to file

  1. Type or print in blue or black ink.
  2. Enter your identifying information and, for a joint return, your spouse’s information.
  3. Enter the financial institution’s name on line 4 and the 9-digit RTN on line 5. The RTN must begin with 01 through 12 or 21 through 32.
  4. Enter your account number on line 6, using up to 17 characters, including numbers and letters. Include hyphens, but omit spaces, special symbols and the check number.
  5. Check either checking or savings on line 7.
  6. Include Form 3174 with your Form MI-1040CR-7. The form does not provide a mailing address.

Filing electronically? Do not file Form 3174. Give your RTN and account number to your tax preparer so the information becomes part of the electronic file.

Common mistakes

  • Including the check number. Enter only the account number on line 6, not the check number.
  • Attaching a check or copy. The form specifically says not to attach either.
  • Using incorrect bank details or account type. An incorrect RTN, account number or line 7 selection can cause the financial institution to reject the deposit. Routing and account numbers may appear in different locations on your check.
  • Using a closed account. This can prevent the direct deposit request from being honored.
  • Requesting deposit to a foreign account. Michigan can only make direct deposits to financial institutions located in the United States, not foreign branches of U.S. institutions.
  • Skipping the joint-account check. If a joint refund will go into an individual account, verify that the financial institution allows it.
