Schedule CRS: Credit Recapture Schedule (2025)
Massachusetts · Massachusetts DOR · Used for tax years 2025
Massachusetts Schedule CRS reports calculations for tax credits subject to recapture. It lists the original and revised credit amounts, credits never used, and any resulting addition to excise.
Who files this form
Taxpayers who must calculate recapture of a Massachusetts tax credit must complete Schedule CRS, even if the calculation shows that no recapture tax is due.
Certain credits are subject to recapture under the law authorizing the credit. For example, investment tax credit recapture may apply when an asset for which the credit was taken is disposed of before the end of its useful life.
What you'll need
Have the following information ready to complete the schedule:
- Taxpayer name, identification number, and tax period.
- Each credit type requiring a recapture calculation and its related period end date.
- Certificate numbers for credits tracked by certificate number.
- The original and revised credit amounts.
- Any amount of the credit that was never used and any available credit carryover.
Common mistakes
- Do not skip Schedule CRS just because no recapture tax is due. You must complete it if a recapture calculation is required.
- Do not combine credits that must be listed separately. For credits tracked by certificate number, list each certificate number and its associated credits separately. For other credits, list them separately by type and year.
- List only credits and certificate numbers or tax years for which a credit reduction is being calculated.
- For investment tax credits and similar credits involving only some assets from a given year, use the original and revised credit amounts for the assets subject to recapture, not all assets from that year.
- If unused credit offsets tentative recapture, remember to reduce any available credit carryover by the amount used for that offset.
Questions people ask
What is credit recapture?
When a recapture calculation is required, the allowed credit is recalculated. A reduction in the allowable credit is recaptured to the extent the credit was taken or used in a prior year.
Do I need to complete Schedule CRS if I owe no recapture tax?
Yes. Taxpayers who have a recapture calculation must complete the schedule whether or not recapture tax is due.
How do I calculate tentative recapture?
Show the original credit amount and the revised amount. The difference is the reduction in credit, also called tentative recapture.
What if I never used some of the credit?
Subtract the unused amount associated with the applicable certificate number or tax year from tentative recapture. Any reduction not offset is added to the return as recapture tax. Reduce any available credit carryover by the amount used to offset tentative recapture.
