Massachusetts · Massachusetts DOR · Used for tax years 2024
Massachusetts Form M-63D-EXT is an entity-level tax extension payment worksheet for pass-through entities. It calculates the 2024 tax due after subtracting Massachusetts entity-level tax withheld, a prior-year overpayment applied to 2024 estimated tax, and 2024 estimated tax paym
Who files this form
Form M-63D-EXT is a worksheet for pass-through entity (PTE) taxpayers that have elected to pay the PTE Excise. Use it to calculate the tax due for an extension payment.
PTE taxpayers receive an automatic six-month filing extension if at least 80% of the tax due for the taxable year is paid by the original return due date. If worksheet line 6 shows no tax due, no further action is needed for the extension.
When it's due
The tax year 2024 worksheet lists these extension payment deadlines:
- Calendar-year S corporations filing Form 355S or Form 63-FI, and partnerships filing Form 3: March 15.
- Calendar-year trusts filing Form 2: April 15.
- Fiscal-year S corporations and partnerships: the 15th day of the third month following the close of the tax year.
- Fiscal-year trusts: the 15th day of the fourth month following the close of the tax year.
If the due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, use the next regular workday.
The full amount on line 6 must be paid by the original return due date. The six-month filing extension does not extend the payment deadline.
What you'll need
Have these figures available to complete the worksheet:
- Expected total tax for 2024 from Form 63D-ELT, Calculation section, line 2.
- Massachusetts Entity-Level Tax withheld.
- Any 2023 overpayment applied to your 2024 estimated tax, excluding any 2023 refund.
- Your 2024 Massachusetts estimated tax payments, excluding the overpayment already entered on line 3.
How to file
- Enter expected 2024 tax on line 1.
- Enter withholding, the prior-year overpayment applied, and estimated payments on lines 2 through 4.
- Add lines 2 through 4 and enter the total on line 5.
- Subtract line 5 from line 1. Enter the result on line 6, but not less than zero.
- If line 6 shows tax due, pay the full amount electronically by the original return due date. You can pay through MassTaxConnect at mass.gov/masstaxconnect.
Any PTE taxpayer making an extension payment must pay electronically. If line 6 is zero, no further action is needed for the extension.
Common mistakes
- Entering a 2023 refund on line 3. Only include a 2023 overpayment applied to 2024 estimated tax.
- Counting an overpayment twice. Do not include the amount from line 3 in line 4.
- Entering a negative amount on line 6. The amount cannot be less than zero.
- Treating a filing extension as extra time to pay. Interest applies to tax not paid by the original due date.
- Missing the 80% payment requirement. If less than 80% of the tax due is paid by the original due date, the extension is invalid and late-return and late-payment penalties and interest are assessed from that date.
Questions people ask
Is the filing extension automatic?
Yes. PTE taxpayers that pay at least 80% of the tax due by the original return due date receive an automatic six-month filing extension.
What if line 6 shows no tax due?
No further action is needed for the extension.
Can I make the extension payment online?
Yes. You can pay through MassTaxConnect at mass.gov/masstaxconnect. Extension payments must be made electronically.
Will interest or penalties apply during an extension?
Interest is charged on tax not paid by the original due date. Tax not paid within the extended period is subject to a penalty of 1% per month, up to 25%, from the extended due date. If the extension is invalid because the 80% payment requirement was not met, late-return and late-payment penalties and interest are assessed from the original due date.
