M-2210F: Underpayment of Massachusetts Estimated Income Tax for Fiduciaries (2024)
Massachusetts · Massachusetts DOR · Used for tax years 2024
Massachusetts Form M-2210F calculates a fiduciary's underpayment of estimated income tax and any resulting penalty for 2024. It includes penalty exceptions and an annualized income installment method, and is enclosed with the income tax return.
Who files this form
Use Form M-2210F if you are a fiduciary receiving income taxable at the entity level. The form determines whether your 2024 estimated tax payments and withholding were sufficient and whether you owe an underpayment penalty.
If your 2024 tax due after credits and withholding is $400 or less, you do not need to complete this form.
Other exceptions or waivers may apply. If you claim one of those exceptions or a waiver, enclose Form M-2210F with your return.
When it's due
For tax year 2024, the instructions give these general estimated tax payment dates:
- Pay in full on or before April 15, 2024, or in equal installments on or before April 15, June 15, and September 15, 2024, and January 15, 2025.
- If a due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, payment may be made on the next business day.
- For a fiscal year, the form lists installment dates as the 15th day of the fourth, sixth, and ninth months of the taxable year and the first month of the next taxable year.
For the qualified farmer or fisherman exception for tax year 2024, file your return and pay the full amount due by March 1, 2025.
What you'll need
Have these returns and payment details available:
- Your 2024 Form 2 or Form M-990T-62, for total tax and credits.
- Your 2023 return, if filed, for your tax liability after credits and whether it covered a full 12 months.
- Estimated tax payment amounts and dates for each installment, plus withholding amounts. You may use actual withholding dates if you can establish the dates and amounts.
- Income and credit amounts for the periods shown in Part 3, if you use the annualized income installment method.
Additional attachments may be needed:
- A separate penalty computation for each payment if you made more than one payment for an installment.
- An explanation of your reasons if you claim a waiver.
- A separate penalty calculation statement if you are a fiscal-year taxpayer subject to a penalty.

Common mistakes
- Leaving installment columns incomplete: The instructions say to complete all four columns on lines 7 through 13, in installment due-date order.
- Using line 5 without an eligible prior-year return: If you did not file a 2023 return, or it covered less than 12 months, leave line 5 blank and enter line 4's amount on line 6.
- Combining multiple payments without separate calculations: Attach a separate penalty computation for each payment when more than one payment was made for an installment.
- Forgetting the annualized-method notation: If you annualize income, enter the adjusted installment amounts on line 8 and write “ANNUALIZED” under the column on line 24.
- Omitting a waiver explanation: A waiver claim must include an explanation of your reasons with the form and return.
Questions people ask
When are estimated tax vouchers required?
You must file estimated tax vouchers if you reasonably expect to pay more than $400 in Massachusetts income tax on income not covered by withholding.
Can my 2023 tax help me avoid a penalty for 2024?
Yes. An exception applies if your 2024 estimated payments and withholding made by each installment due date equal or exceed the tax shown on your 2023 return, divided among the four installment due dates. The 2023 return must cover a full 12 months.
Who qualifies for the farmer or fisherman exception?
Your gross income from farming or fishing must be at least two-thirds of the annual gross income shown on your 2023 or 2024 return. For the 2024 exception, you must file and pay in full with your return by March 1, 2025.
What if my income was uneven during the year?
You may use Part 3's annualized income installment method to adjust required installment amounts. Enter the adjusted amounts in the appropriate columns on line 8 and calculate any penalty using those figures.
When might a penalty waiver be granted?
A waiver may be granted if the underpayment resulted from casualty, disaster, or unusual circumstances. It may also be granted if you retired in 2023 or 2024 after reaching age 62, or became disabled, and the underpayment was due to reasonable cause rather than willful neglect.
