2: Fiduciary Income Tax Return (2024)

Massachusetts · Massachusetts DOR · Used for tax years 2024

Massachusetts Form 2 is the 2024 Fiduciary Income Tax Return for estates and trusts. It reports income, capital gains, deductions, credits and tax payments, and calculates the tax payable by the fiduciary.

What you'll need

Have the estate or trust’s name and employer identification number, the fiduciary’s name and mailing address, and the date the entity was created ready.

Depending on what you report, the form calls for these enclosures:

  • Rental, royalty or REMIC income or loss: Form 2, Schedule E.
  • Other Part B income: A statement supporting the amount on line 6.
  • Income distribution deductions: Schedules IDD and 2K-1.
  • Part A interest, dividends or capital gains: Form 2, Schedule B.
  • Part C long-term capital gains: Form 2, Schedule D. If filing Schedule D-IS for installment sales, enclose it and fill in the oval.
  • Credit for income taxes due to other jurisdictions: Schedule OJC.
  • Massachusetts income tax withheld: All Massachusetts W-2, W-2G, 1099-G and 1099-R forms.

The return also uses amounts from Schedule CRS for credit recapture, Schedule CMS for credits, and Schedule 4% Surtax for the surtax.

Common mistakes

  • Counting a prior-year overpayment twice: Line 52 says not to include the prior-year overpayment already entered on line 51.
  • Using amended-return lines on an original return: Lines 48 and 54 are marked “Amended return only.”
  • Entering negative amounts where prohibited: Follow the “Not less than 0” reminders on the applicable lines.
  • Missing the collectibles steps: If reporting long-term gains on collectibles, fill in the oval and complete the worksheet in the instructions.
  • Overlooking the election warning: The annual voluntary election to pay tax at the entity level under MGL chapter 63D is irrevocable.
