Who files this form
Pass-through entities (PTEs) must make quarterly estimated payments when their tax is expected to exceed $1,000 for the tax year. Form 510/511D is used to declare and pay that estimated tax.
PTEs are generally required to pay tax on behalf of nonresident members. They may elect to pay tax at the entity level on all members’ shares, including resident members’ shares.
Certain PTEs that meet reporting requirements are exempt from paying nonresident tax on behalf of their nonresident members. The text refers to the Form 510 instructions for details.
A PTE with a short tax period of less than 4 months does not have to pay estimated tax or file Form 510/511D.
When it's due
For a tax year beginning in 2024, the filing schedule is based on the start of the PTE’s tax year:
- S corporations: File on or before the 15th day of the 4th, 6th, 9th and 12th months following the beginning of the tax year or period.
- Partnerships, LLCs and business trusts: The listed installment months are the 4th, 6th, 9th and 13th months following the beginning of the tax year.
Use the form with the preprinted year in which the PTE’s tax year begins. If the PTE uses a fiscal year, enter its beginning and ending dates at the top of the form.
What you'll need
Have the following information ready to complete the form:
- The exact PTE name, including any “Trading As” (T/A) name, and current mailing address.
- The Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN). If you have applied but have not received it, enter “APPLIED FOR” followed by the application date.
- The entity type: S corporation, partnership, limited liability company or business trust.
- Fiscal-year beginning and ending dates, if applicable.
- Expected taxable income for the member categories covered by your payment, as listed in the worksheet.
- Your Box A or Box B selection from the first filing of the tax year, if this is a later filing.
For a mailed payment, include a check or money order payable to Comptroller of Maryland.
How to file
- Enter the PTE’s identifying information and check the applicable entity type. Print using blue or black ink only.
- Select Box A to pay tax at the entity level on all members’ shares, or Box B to pay only on behalf of nonresident members. The first filing’s choice is irrevocable for the tax year and must match later filings.
- Complete the estimated tax worksheet and enter the payment amount. For later estimated payments, you do not need to complete the worksheet again if you have already calculated the quarterly amount.
Electronic filing: You may file using Modernized Electronic Filing (MeF) through a provider approved by the IRS and Revenue Administration Division. If you file electronically, do not mail Form 510/511D. Keep it with the company’s records.

Common mistakes
- Leaving both election boxes blank or checking both. You must select either Box A or Box B. On the first filing, neither box checked is treated as choosing nonresident-only payments. Both boxes checked is treated as choosing payments on all members’ shares. These decisions are irrevocable for the tax year.
- Changing the election on later filings. Use the same box on subsequent Forms 510/511D and any Form 510/511E extension request. Box A requires Form 511 as the year-end return; Box B requires Form 510.
- Using the wrong tax-year form. The preprinted year must match the year in which the PTE’s tax year begins.
- Omitting payment details. Missing the FEIN, tax year or tax type on a check or money order will delay processing. Do not send cash.
- Mailing a form already filed electronically. Keep the electronically filed form with company records instead.
- Paying too little or paying late. The text warns of interest and penalties. Total estimated payments must be at least 90% of the current-year tax or 110% of the prior-year tax to avoid interest and penalty.
Questions people ask
Can I change from Box A to Box B later in 2024?
No. The choice made on the first filing is irrevocable for the tax year. All subsequent filings must use the same selection.
Do I need to complete the worksheet for every payment?
No. For subsequent estimated payments, you may skip the worksheet if you previously calculated the amount to pay each quarter.
What if my estimated tax changes?
Recalculate the estimate using the worksheet. Adjust the next installment for any earlier underpayment or overpayment. The remaining installments must each be at least 25% of the amended estimated tax due for the year.
What must the PTE give its members to claim credit for tax paid?
The PTE must issue Maryland Schedule K-1 (510/511) to each member showing the tax paid for the member or on the member’s behalf. Members must include that statement with their own income tax returns to claim the credit.
