504D: Fiduciary Declaration of Estimated Income Tax (2025)

Maryland · Comptroller of Maryland · Used for tax years 2025

Maryland Form 504D is used by fiduciaries of estates and trusts to declare and pay estimated income tax for 2025. It includes a worksheet to calculate estimated Maryland and local income tax or special nonresident tax, credits, and installment payments.

Who files this form

File Form 504D if you are required to file a Maryland fiduciary income tax return and your expected taxable income would produce tax of more than $500.

You must also file a declaration with full payment within 60 days after receiving $500 or more in income from awards, prizes, lotteries or raffles, in cash or property, if Maryland and local tax has not been withheld.

A personal representative of an estate does not have to make estimated tax payments for the estate’s first two tax years.

When it's due

For the 2025 tax year, estimated payments are due:

  • April 15, 2025: Pay at least one-fourth of the total estimated tax.
  • June 15, 2025: Second quarterly payment.
  • September 15, 2025: Third quarterly payment.
  • January 15, 2026: Fourth quarterly payment.

You may pay the full estimated tax with your first payment.

Instead of making the fourth payment, you may file your 2025 fiduciary income tax return by January 31, 2026, and pay the full remaining tax balance with the return.

For fiscal-year filers, payments are due on the 15th day of the 4th, 6th, 9th and 13th months following the beginning of the fiscal year.

What you'll need

Have the following information ready to complete Form 504D:

  • The estate or trust’s name and nine-digit Federal Employer Identification Number.
  • The fiduciary’s name, title and current mailing address.
  • Expected 2025 federal taxable income, the expected federal exemption, net modifications and any nonresident beneficiary deduction.
  • The applicable Maryland exemption, state tax and local or special nonresident tax.
  • Any credits claimed on line 13, using Form 502CR for resident fiduciaries’ tax paid to another state, or Form 504CR and/or Form 502S for tax paid by pass-through entities.

You may use your 2024 income and tax as a guide. Nonresident fiduciaries are directed to use the 2024 Form 504 and Form 504NR when calculating their 2025 estimated tax, along with the tax rate schedule in the instructions.

How to file

  1. Review the instructions and complete Form 504D using blue or black ink. Check the box if you are a first-time filer or your mailing address has changed.
  2. Use the worksheet to calculate your estimated tax and enter the amount paid with this declaration. For later payments, you may skip the worksheet if you already calculated your quarterly payment amount.
  3. Make your check or money order payable to Comptroller of Maryland. In blue or black ink, include the Federal Employer Identification Number, tax year and tax type. Do not send cash.
  4. Mail your declaration and payment to:

Comptroller of Maryland

Common mistakes

  • Leaving identifying information off the payment. Missing the Federal Employer Identification Number, tax year or tax type will delay payment processing.
  • Using the wrong ink or sending cash. Use blue or black ink on the form and payment. Do not send cash.
  • Missing filing or payment deadlines. The instructions warn that late declarations or installments can result in penalties and interest.
  • Underestimating the tax. The instructions warn of penalties and interest if the estimate is less than 90% of the tax shown on the current-year return and less than 110% of the prior-year tax. They also state that if you expect more income in 2025, you must pay at least 110% of the prior-year tax to avoid interest for underpayment.

Questions people ask

Can I apply a 2024 overpayment to my 2025 estimated tax?

Yes. You may apply all or part of your 2024 Form 504 overpayment. If it covers the first quarterly payment, you do not need to file that declaration. If it covers only part, file the declaration and pay the remaining first-installment balance. Preprinted vouchers will be mailed for the remaining payments.

What if my income changes during 2025?

A large increase in income after April 15, 2025, may require a declaration even if one was not required on that date. To amend an existing declaration, increase or decrease the remaining payments.

What Maryland exemption should I use?

A personal representative uses $600 on line 8. Other fiduciaries use $200.

Which local tax jurisdiction should I use?

A personal representative uses the jurisdiction where the decedent was domiciled on the date of death. Other fiduciaries use the jurisdiction where the trust was created or is principally administered. The instructions list a special nonresident tax rate of .0225 for nonresident fiduciaries.
