504A: Fiduciary Income Tax Return Schedule A (2025)

Maryland · Comptroller of Maryland · Used for tax years 2025

Maryland Form 504 Schedule A calculates the fiduciary’s share of Maryland additions and subtractions to income for Form 504. It also calculates the nonresident beneficiary deduction.

Who files this form

The 2025 Schedule A gives these rules for completing the fiduciary’s share of Maryland modifications:

  • All income distributed: You do not need to complete lines 1 through 10g.
  • All income retained: Complete lines 1 through 8 and enter the result on line 5 of Form 504.
  • Some income distributed: Complete lines 1 through 8, then either lines 9a through 9d or lines 10a through 10g. Enter the fiduciary’s share on line 5 of Form 504.

Complete the nonresident beneficiary deduction area only if any beneficiaries are nonresidents of Maryland.

What you'll need

Have the information needed for the parts you complete:

  • The name and FEIN requested at the top of the schedule.
  • Amounts for additions and subtractions, including income taxes deducted on the federal return, interest on non-Maryland state and local obligations, and income from U.S. obligations.
  • For the formula method: Federal Schedule B, Form 1041, for distributable net income (DNI), plus the fiduciary’s share of that income.
  • For the alternative method: Each beneficiary’s name, Social Security number, domicile state code, and share of net Maryland modifications. If there are more than four beneficiaries, attach a separate statement.
  • For the nonresident beneficiary deduction: Income from intangible personal property accumulated for a nonresident and related expenses. The form directs you to attach Maryland Schedule K-1 (504) for each beneficiary and to see Instruction 8 for required supporting documents to submit with Form 504.

Instruction 8 was not included in the supplied text, so its additional document requirements are not listed here.

Common mistakes

  • Using both allocation methods: Choose either the formula method or the alternative method, not both.
  • Subtracting non-Maryland source income on line 6: The form expressly says not to include it as a subtraction.
  • Leaving off a minus sign: Write a minus sign (-) in front of negative numbers.
  • Omitting additional beneficiaries: Under the alternative method, attach a separate statement if there are more than four beneficiaries and include its amounts in the beneficiaries’ total.
  • Entering a negative nonresident beneficiary deduction: If line 11 minus line 12 is less than zero, enter zero on line 13.

Questions people ask

How are net Maryland modifications calculated?

Add lines 1 through 3 to get total additions on line 4. Add lines 5 and 6 to get total subtractions on line 7. Subtract line 7 from line 4 and enter the result on line 8.

How does the formula method work?

Divide the fiduciary’s share of federal distributable net income on line 9b by total federal DNI on line 9a. Enter that percentage on line 9c, then multiply line 8 by line 9c. Enter the result on line 9d and line 5 of Form 504.

What is the alternative allocation method?

You may allocate net Maryland modifications based on how the fiduciary allocated all of its income. List the beneficiaries’ shares, total them on line 10e, and enter the fiduciary’s share on line 10f and line 5 of Form 504.

Where does the nonresident beneficiary deduction go?

Subtract related expenses on line 12 from income on line 11. Enter the result on line 13 and line 7 of Form 504. If the result is less than zero, enter zero.
