500D: Declaration of Estimated Corporation Income Tax (2025)
Maryland · Comptroller of Maryland · Used for tax years 2025
Maryland Form 500D is used by corporations to declare and pay estimated income tax for a tax year beginning in 2025. It includes a worksheet for expected taxable income, estimated annual and quarterly tax, and the amount paid with the declaration.
Who files this form
A corporation must make estimated income tax payments if it reasonably expects its Maryland taxable income to produce more than $1,000 in tax for the tax year or period. Form 500D is used to declare and pay that estimated tax.
- A corporation with a short tax period of less than 4 months does not have to pay estimated tax or file Form 500D.
- Affiliated corporations filing a consolidated federal return must file separate Maryland declarations for each member corporation. Maryland does not allow consolidated returns.
- Do not use Form 500D for estimated tax for Forms 510 or 511, or for employer withholding tax.
When it's due
For the tax year or period beginning in 2025, file Form 500D on or before the 15th day of the 4th, 6th, 9th and 12th months following the beginning of the tax year or period.
At least 25% of the total estimated tax must be paid by each installment due date. For a short tax year that requires estimated payments, divide the total required estimated tax by the number of installment due dates occurring during that short year.
What you'll need
Have the following information ready:
- The corporation’s name exactly as shown in its Articles of Incorporation, or as amended, followed by any “Trading As” (T/A) name.
- Current mailing address and Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN).
- The beginning and ending dates of the tax year, using the same tax year or period as the federal return.
- Expected taxable income, tax credits and the amount of estimated tax being paid.
If the FEIN has been applied for but not received, enter “APPLIED FOR” followed by the application date. If it has not been applied for, apply immediately.
For a mailed payment, include a check or money order payable to Comptroller of Maryland.
How to file
Complete the corporation’s identifying information and tax-year dates. Use blue or black ink when printing. The worksheet calculates estimated annual tax as 8.25% of expected taxable income, reduced by tax credits, then divides that amount by four. Enter the amount paid with this declaration.
Electronic funds transfer: Register before using this method. Obtain a registration form at marylandtaxes.gov or call 410-260-7980. Do not mail Form 500D after paying by electronic funds transfer. Keep it with the company’s records.
Electronic filing: You may use Modernized Electronic Filing through a provider approved by the IRS and Revenue Administration Division. Do not mail Form 500D if you file electronically. Keep it with the company’s records.
Payments of $10,000 or more must use one of these two electronic methods.
By mail: Send the completed Form 500D and a check or money order payable to Comptroller of Maryland to:
Comptroller of Maryland

For additional installments in the current tax year, file electronically or download another Form 500D from marylandtaxes.gov.
Common mistakes
- Leaving identifying information off a payment. Missing the FEIN, tax type or tax year will delay processing.
- Mailing the form after an electronic payment or filing. Keep Form 500D with the company’s records instead.
- Sending cash or mailing a payment of $10,000 or more. Cash is not allowed, and payments of $10,000 or more must use an approved electronic method.
- Using the form for the wrong tax. Do not use it for Forms 510 or 511 estimated tax or employer withholding tax.
- Underpaying or paying late. To avoid interest and/or penalty, total estimated payments must be at least 90% of the current year’s tax or 110% of the prior year’s tax, with the required installments paid when due.
- Using the annualization method. This method is not permitted for corporations.
- Missing the first-time filer or name-change checkbox. Check it if either applies.
Questions people ask
Can a prior-year overpayment cover this year’s estimated tax?
Yes. You may apply some or all of an overpayment from the prior year’s Form 500, Maryland Corporation Income Tax Return, to this year’s estimated tax obligation.
What if my estimated tax changes during the year?
Recalculate the required estimated tax using the worksheet. Adjust the next installment for any previous underpayment or overpayment. Remaining installments must each be at least 25% of the amended estimated tax due for the year.
Do I need to complete the worksheet for every payment?
No. For later estimated payments, you do not need to complete it if you already calculated the amount to pay each quarter.
How much estimated tax is required for a short tax year?
The total required is at least 90% of the current short tax year’s tax or 110% of the prior year’s tax. Divide that total by the number of installment due dates during the short tax year. If the short period is less than 4 months, no estimated tax payment or Form 500D is required.
