K-60: Community Service Contribution Credit Schedule (Revision 2024-07)

Kansas · Kansas DOR · Used for tax years 2024, 2025, 2026

Kansas Schedule K-60 calculates the Community Service Contribution Credit for contributions to approved community service organizations. It reports contributions, available credits, and any refundable excess or unused assigned credit carried forward.

Who files this form

Use Schedule K-60 to claim the Kansas Community Service Contribution Credit for contributions to an approved community service organization. Eligible organizations and programs are approved by the Kansas Department of Commerce.

The schedule lists these taxpayer types:

  • Corporations filing Form K-120.
  • Individuals filing Form K-40.
  • Partnerships or S corporations filing Form K-120S.
  • Fiduciaries filing Form K-41.
  • Banks, trust companies, or savings and loans filing Form K-130.

Schedule K-60 also covers available credit carried forward from a prior year and credits assigned to a taxpayer. Complete a separate schedule for each community service organization you contributed to during the tax year.

What you'll need

Have the following information and records available:

  • Your taxpayer name, Social Security number or EIN, and taxable year.
  • The community service organization's name and address, certificate number, and authorized credit percentage.
  • Your total contributions for the tax year.
  • If you are a partner, shareholder, or member, the entity's name and EIN and your proportionate share percentage.
  • Your Kansas tax liability after all other credits.

For a new credit, keep a copy of the approval from the community service organization. This may be an approved tax credit application or a tax credit certificate.

If claiming a carryforward, enclose a copy of the prior year's Schedule K-60.

If claiming an assigned credit, enclose copies of the written assignment agreement, the notification sent to the Director of Community Development at the Kansas Department of Commerce, and the acknowledgment letter received from that department.

How to file

Attach Schedule K-60 to your tax return. Complete the information at the top and use a separate schedule for each community service organization you contributed to.

  • Part A: Enter contributions, your share percentage, and the authorized credit percentage to calculate your credit for this year's contributions. All taxpayers other than partners, shareholders, or members of pass-through entities enter 100% on line 2.
  • Part B: Add any available carryforward and calculate this year's credit.
  • Part C: Calculate the refundable excess credit, when applicable.
  • Part D: Calculate unused assigned credit to carry forward. Assigned credits are not refundable.

If you file Form K-120 or K-130 and claim a credit eligible for refund, the form directs you to stop at line 7 and enter that amount on the appropriate line of your return.

Common mistakes

  • Combining organizations on one schedule. Complete a separate K-60 for each community service organization you contributed to during the tax year.
  • Missing the required addition modification. Unless you are claiming an assigned credit, you must make an addition modification on your Kansas return for any charitable contribution claimed on your federal return and used as the basis for this credit.
  • Not keeping the approval. Keep a copy of the approved application or tax credit certificate for a new credit. The Kansas Department of Revenue may request supporting certifications or agreements.
  • Requesting a refund of assigned credit. Assigned credits must be carried forward and are not eligible for refund.
  • Leaving out carryforward records. Enclose the prior year's K-60 when claiming a carryforward. Keep a copy of the current schedule to file with next year's return and K-60 if carrying credit forward.

Questions people ask

How much is the credit?

The credit is 50% of contributions to an approved organization, or 70% if the approved organization is in a rural community as defined by law. Use the percentage authorized by the Kansas Department of Commerce.

Can unused credit be refunded?

The instructions generally allow a refund when the credit exceeds your tax liability. Assigned credits are an exception: they must be carried forward and are not refundable.

How long can unused assigned credit be carried forward?

A business firm that acquired the credit from a business firm not subject to Kansas income, privilege, or premiums tax may carry unused assigned credit forward for up to five years. The total credit must be claimed within 10 years after the tax year the contribution was made.
