K-31: Center for Entrepreneurship Credit Schedule (Revision 2024-07)

Kansas · Kansas DOR · Used for tax years 2024, 2025, 2026

Kansas Schedule K-31 calculates the Center for Entrepreneurship tax credit for contributions to the Kansas Center for Entrepreneurship (KCE). It reports contributions, your share of the credit, the credit allowed for the current tax year, and any unused credit carried forward.

Who files this form

Use Schedule K-31 to claim the Kansas Center for Entrepreneurship (KCE) credit for qualifying contributions or an available credit carried forward from a prior year.

A qualifying contribution is cash or property, other than used clothing, worth $250 or more. Your application for registration of authorized tax credits must be approved by the KCE.

The credit applies against income or premiums tax, and is also available for privilege tax measured by the net income of financial institutions. Partners, shareholders and members of pass-through entities use their proportionate share of the contribution.

What you'll need

Have these records and details available to complete the schedule:

  • Your tax year, taxpayer name as shown on your return, and Social Security number or EIN.
  • The exact dates and amounts of your contributions to the KCE.
  • Your prior year's Schedule K-31, if you have an available carryforward credit.
  • Your Kansas tax liability after all other credits.
  • If you are a partner, shareholder or member: the entity's name, EIN and your proportionate share percentage.

Keep a copy of the approved KCE authorization with your records. The instructions say not to send it with the schedule.

How to file

Complete Schedule K-31 as follows:

  1. Enter the requested taxpayer information and contribution dates and amounts.
  2. In Part A, enter your total contributions and proportionate share. All taxpayers other than partners, shareholders or members of pass-through entities enter 100% on line 2. Multiply your share of contributions by 75% to calculate line 5.
  3. In Part B, add any available prior-year carryforward. On line 9, enter the smaller of your total available credit or your Kansas tax liability after all other credits.
  4. Enter the line 9 credit on the appropriate line of Form K-40, K-41, K-120 or K-130.
  5. In Part C, subtract line 9 from line 7. Carry that amount to line 6 of next year's Schedule K-31.

The form is marked “Attach.” The supplied text does not give a filing address or e-file instructions.

Common mistakes

  • Do not send enclosures with the schedule. The instructions specifically warn against this.
  • Do not send your approved KCE authorization. Keep a copy with your records instead.

Questions people ask

How much is the credit?

The credit is 75% of qualifying contributions, subject to the stated limits. For tax years 2024, 2025 and 2026, the limit is $100,000 per individual contributor per tax year. The amount claimed for the year cannot exceed your Kansas tax liability after all other credits.

Does donated property qualify?

Yes, except for used clothing. A qualifying contribution of cash or property must have an amount or value of at least $250.

Do I need approval before receiving the credit?

Yes. The KCE must approve your application for registration of authorized tax credits. Keep a copy of the approved authorization with your records.
