K-139F: Corporate Application for Refund from Carryback of Farm Net Operating Loss (Revision 2018-08)

Kansas · Kansas DOR · Used for tax years 2024, 2025, 2026

Kansas Form K-139F is a corporate schedule for calculating a tax refund from carrying back a farm net operating loss. It reports the decrease in tax from the carryback and tracks refunds, amounts applied to later tax liabilities, and the remaining overpayment balance.

Who files this form

Kansas corporations use Schedule K-139F to claim a refund from carrying back a farm net operating loss (NOL). Chart I is only for farm NOL carrybacks.

The corporation must have a federal farm NOL to have a Kansas NOL. A Kansas farm NOL may be carried back only if it is carried back on the federal return.

What you'll need

  • A copy of federal Form 1139 or 1120X and federal supporting schedules. The form states that no refund will be made without federal supporting schedules.
  • Applicable nonrefundable credit schedules if the original credit amount changed.
  • The corporation’s name, federal identification number and principal office address.
  • The loss year, loss amount and date the loss-year return was filed.
  • Taxable income, tax liability and credit information for the carryback years, as originally filed or last determined.
  • For Chart II, records of refunds already issued, the current year’s tax liability after other credits and the remaining overpayment balance.

How to file

Include Schedule K-139F with your loss-year return. Print or type the information on the schedule.

  1. Enter the corporation’s information and farm NOL details, and indicate whether the loss-year return is a final Kansas return.
  2. Complete Chart I to calculate the decrease in tax from the carryback.
  3. Complete Chart II to track refunds and any carryforward of the resulting overpayment.
  4. Enter the refund requested in Chart II, column (d), on the appropriate refundable credit line in Form K-120, Part I. Enter the amount applied against tax liability in column (f) on the appropriate nonrefundable credit line in Form K-120, Part I.
  5. Complete the officer and preparer signature fields and attach the required federal documents and any applicable credit schedules.

The supplied text does not give a mailing address or e-filing instructions.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving out federal supporting schedules. The form warns that no refund will be made without them. Enclose a copy of federal Form 1139 or 1120X.
  • Filing the schedule separately from the loss-year return. The instructions say to include K-139F with that return.
  • Omitting changed credit schedules. Enclose applicable schedules if the original nonrefundable credit amount changed.
  • Requesting more than the annual refund limit. Farm NOL carryback refunds are limited to $1,500 per year.
  • Applying too much carryforward against current tax. Chart II, column (f), must not exceed the year’s tax liability after all credits other than this credit.

Questions people ask

How far back can a farm NOL be carried?

The instructions allow a maximum carryback of five taxable years, provided the loss is also carried back on the federal return.

How long can the farm NOL be carried forward?

The instructions allow the farm NOL to be carried forward to each of the ten taxable years following the loss year.

Can the entire carryback refund be paid in one year?

What is Chart II for?

Use Chart II to track refunds from a farm NOL carryback and any later carryforward of those refunds. It records the loss year, refunds, tax liability, amounts applied against tax and the remaining balance.
